Change My Major
It's important to have a declared major on file. Your major will determine what classes you take as you move toward graduation. Also, to use financial aid, you must have an eligible major on file and take classes within that major. However, you may need to change your major during your time at Columbus State.

How to Change Your Major
There are several ways to change your major, depending on your circumstances and how much help you need.
New Students
If you have not yet started classes, the best way to change your major is to contact New Student Onboarding Services.
Current Students
If you have been at Columbus State for at least a semester, there are three ways to change your major:
- Call the Telephone Information Center at (614) 287-5353 or visit Student Central.
- Connect with your Academic Advisor. Your advisor can help you choose classes and make sure you're in the right degree or certificate program. Your Academic Advisor can also help you add a second program of study.
- If you're sure you know which major you want to switch to, fill out a Program of Study Update Form. Find more information on how to complete and return the form at Student Information Updates.
How to Declare a Major
Most students will declare a major when they Apply for Admission to Columbus State.
Transient Students: A student who is just taking a few classes at Columbus State while enrolled at another college is designated a "Transient Student." For example, many students take classes here over the summer. Declare as a Transient Student on your application.
Certificate Students: Please declare your major if you're just going for a short-term certificate. This information will allow us to help you toward your goal (and estimate how many class sections we need).
Find Your Declared Major
What is my major? What major do I have on file? You can find your major by accessing your Degree Audit.
- Log in to CougarWeb / Self-Service
- Click on "Academics" in the left-hand menu and then "Degree Audit"
Inside Degree Audit, you can select "Select a Different Program" to see what classes you'd need for a different degree plan. Note: "Select a Different Program" does not change your declared major.

Will changing my major affect my Financial Aid?
Yes, changing your major may affect your financial aid. You must have a major on file to receive federal Financial Aid, and not every program is eligible for Financial Aid.
Additionally, Financial Aid will only pay for classes within your declared major. So changing your degree plan may increase or decrease your Financial Aid, depending on the number of course hours that are within your program of study.
