Placement & Testing

Placement & Testing is Step 3 in the Get Started Guide
Placement Testing is how we determine which classes you'll start with when you get to Columbus State. We want to ensure you have the best chance to succeed so you don't have to retake subjects you've already passed.
Placement Testing is available at the following locations:
- COLUMBUS CAMPUS: Madison Hall, Room 202
- DELAWARE CAMPUS: Moeller Hall, Room 157
- DUBLIN REGIONAL LEARNING CENTER: Room 311
Appointments are required. Schedule a placement testing appointment.
Virtual Placement Testing appointments are available for students who live outside of central Ohio (45 minutes from the Columbus or Delaware campuses). Students with extenuating circumstances may also be given consideration. Approval is required. Submit a virtual appointment request.
Autumn Semester 2023 Deadlines
- ESL Placement: August 14, 2023
- We recommend that testing be completed by August 1, 2023.
- Writing, Reading, and Math Placement: August 25, 2023
- We recommend that testing be completed by August 1, 2023
Prior to registering for classes, new students should submit their transcripts and ACT/SAT test scores to the College. If you’ve been out of high school for more than 10 years and don’t have documentation, the College has other options for placement. Read more on your specific situation below:
We can use a variety of ways to determine the correct placement for your first semester of classes. Submit one or more of the following documents prior to attending your New Student Program:
- SAT and/or ACT scores, if available
- High school transcript
- Transcripts from any college you attended
- Scores from placement tests you've recently taken
-
GED transcript (qualifying GED scores can be used for placement if they were earned since 01/01/2014)
- Advanced Placement
Submitting Transcripts
Please note, high school/GED transcripts must be on file at Columbus State to receive
federal financial aid. Official transcripts must be received directly from the institution
where the credit was earned. We do not accept PDF transcripts sent from a student’s
personal account or Columbus State student email account.

request that your scores be sent to Columbus State (College Code: 1148).
ACT: Visit act.org, click on "Register, view scores and more," and follow the prompts

Advanced Placement
Scores of 3 or higher on AP exams will be reviewed for college credit. Students who
did not take the
exams, or did not score above a 3, will not be awarded credit. Please be aware that
scores are not released until the month of July. Students who attend Orientation and
register for classes before the release of these scores may contact the New Student Onboarding team for a review of their course recommendations and possible registration updates.
Students must submit an official AP Score Report - www.collegeboard.com/ap/students/
Once your documentation has been sent in, continue to the Orientation and Registration section as described in Step 4 of the Get Started Guide.
If the documentation options above are not available to you, don’t worry. To determine placement for writing, reading, and math, you will need to take placement tests for each area.
Once your documentation has been sent in, continue to the Orientation and Registration section as described in Step 4 of the Get Started Guide.
You, or a representative at your previous institution, may submit placement testing scores if you have taken the exam previously.
We will accept the following scores:
- Accuplacer WritePlacer
- Accuplacer Next Generation Reading
- Accuplacer Reading Comprehension
- ALEKS Math Placement
Score reports from Accuplacer and/or ALEKS must be submitted for entry to placement@cscc.edu. Columbus State does not accept scores on transcripts, hand-written notes, etc.
If English is not the first language you learned, then answer these questions to see if you need to take the ESL placement test.
- Have you had at least eight (8) years of K-12 school in the U.S.?
- If you are a College Credit Plus student, have you had at least six (6) years of school in the U.S.?
- Do you have college-level English transfer credit, or have you earned a degree from a U.S. college or university?
- Do you have a TOEFL score of at least 79 with 20 in both the reading and writing portions in the last two years?
- Do you have an IELTS score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each band in the last two years?
- Do you have an ACT English score of 18 or above or SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 480 or above?
If the answer to one or more of these questions is YES, then you do not need to take the ESL placement test. Contact Columbus State New Student Onboarding for your next steps.
If the answer to all of these questions is NO, then you need to take the ESL placement test to be sure you have a successful start to your college education.
You will be asked to produce a writing sample and complete a multiple-choice test on language use, reading skills, and sentence meaning.
Student eligibility for the College Credit Plus program is determined in one of the
following ways:

If you have earned English or math credit at another college or university, please send the unofficial transcript from that institution to ccpadvising@cscc.edu.
If you have earned English or math Advanced Placement (AP) credit, please email your AP score report to ccpadvising@cscc.edu.

set by the state of Ohio, and then determine course placement. Once your eligibility
has been confirmed, we’ll email you with your next steps.
If you have questions about CCP placement testing, please contact ccpadvising@cscc.edu.
Columbus State’s placement tests are untimed. Appropriate accommodations beyond extra time may be available for students who have submitted documentation to the Accessibility Services office. Advocates will inform new students on how to set up accommodated placement tests if needed.
