Self-Defense Training Program

Class Notes:
Classes are free and open to all students, employees, and community members over the age of 16 years old. Classes are first come, first served and limited to 20 participants.
Please fill out the waiver below and bring it with you to class. (We will have some copies if you forget!)
*New for Spring 2023: If you are a community member coming to campus for class, please park in visitor parking and follow app instructions.

This empowering self-defense training for all folks combines fitness training and martial arts, and is taught by experienced instructors on the Columbus Campus. You can take one or two classes, or progress through the levels of this free training, learning valuable techniques to keep yourself and others safe.

About the Instructors
Sean FosterSean Foster has nine years of municipal and college law enforcement experience. Foster is certified as a Defensive Tactics and Impact Weapons Instructor through the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy and conducts regular defensive tactics training. Sean is also Gracie Survival Tactics Certified. When not on campus, he trains to compete in Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a Brown Belt and as an amateur Mixed Martial Arts athlete in Ohio; he is the current 155lb. Amateur MMA Champion in Ohio. |

Jason AptJason Apt is an athletic conditioning and recreation specialist at Columbus State. Apt earned his associate degree in Sport and Exercise Studies from CSCC, his B.S.in Sport Management from Union Institute and University, and his Master’s degree in Exercise Science from California University of Pennsylvania. He is also a USAW Olympic Lifting Coach. Apt has worked for Columbus State for eight years and serves as the head strength coach for the Athletics Department. Apt also has more than 20 years of martial arts training in Karate, boxing, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai and is Gracie Survival Tactics Certified. |

CHOICES About Alcohol
CHOICES is a brief alcohol abuse prevention and harm reduction program for college-enrolled students involving interactive journaling. The program involves one, 50-minute, facilitated online class presented by Counseling Services. Throughout CHOICES, students are presented with information, and then reflect on what they have learned as it relates to their choices about drinking in their personal journals. Rather than focusing on abstinence, this program encourages a harm-reduction approach to drinking. While it is important to recognize the illegal nature of any underage alcohol use, it is equally important to provide students with accurate information and strategies for reducing their risk if they choose to drink alcohol. CHOICES is presented in a non-confrontational manner that enables students to make their own decisions about alcohol consumption.
CHOICES was created by The Change Companies®, Alan Marlatt, Ph.D., and George Parks, Ph.D. The program is based upon research by the University of Washington Addictive Behaviors Research Center, which has been recognized by NIAAA and SAMHSA as leading alcohol abuse prevention for college students.

- Suicide can be seen as a journey of increasing hopelessness that starts with an idea and ends with an act. Anybody with the right skills can disrupt this journey.
- QPR Gatekeeper training will teach you how to recognize warning signs for suicide, how to approach someone who feels suicidal, and how (and where) to refer that person for help.

Our Professionals are available to Faculty/Staff in need of our services to provide trainings to the Columbus State Community College community. Our trainings include but are not limited to:

- Student Behavior in the Classroom
Our staff is also available to present on a number of other mental health related topics and encourage requests for such.
