Protect yourself: How to spot and avoid tech support scams

Student News | Monday, April 1, 2024

A Columbus State student recently fell victim to this scenario: Scammers pretending to be real tech support representatives trick victims into paying for unnecessary services or giving access to their computers. They often use scare tactics, such as false virus warnings or system errors, to persuade people to call a fake support number. (This was the backstory for the big-screen movie “The Beekeeper,” released in January.)

Steps to protect yourself against tech support scams:

  • Be cautious of unsolicited messages.
  • Never call a number on a security pop-up warning.
  • Never grant remote access to someone who contacts you out of the blue.
  • Use reputable sources for support.
  • Never share passwords, bank account numbers, or personal information.

If you receive a suspicious email, please report it to abuse@cscc.edu, or call the IT Support Center at 614-287-5050.
