Faculty
Kristopher Alexander (EMS Program Coordinator/Associate Professor)
Kris entered the EMS service in 1995. He began as a volunteer EMT/Firefighter while attending Edison State Community College for Accounting. Kris soon discovered his passion was in Fire and EMS. He finished his paramedic certification at Sinclair Community College in 2000 and attended the Ohio Fire Academy to complete his Firefighter II, Arson Investigator, and Fire Safety Inspector certification. He has worked as a 911 dispatcher, as a fulltime firefighter/paramedic, in the ER at Dayton Children’s Hospital, and in the private EMS industry. Kris currently has a Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from Columbia Southern University. As an instructor, Kris holds certifications to teach as an EMS Instructor as well as CPR, First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogen, ACLS, PALS, ITLS, and PHTLS. Kris is the Paramedic Program Director and will be assuming the role of EMS Program Coordinator at Columbus State Community College in summer 2024.
Jonathan Packer (EMS Program Coordinator/Professor)
Jon has worked in the public safety field since 1977. He is a former police officer who achieved the ranks of detective and sergeant. While working as a police officer Jon discovered his love for EMS. He became an EMT in 1979 and a paramedic in 1983. In 1987 Jon left full time law enforcement to work full time in EMS. During his career he has worked in both fire and EMS systems including duties as an EMS Coordinator and EMS Lieutenant. He has an Associate Degree in Emergency Medical Services from Columbus State and a Bachelor of Science in Public Safety Management from Franklin University. Jon teaches EMS and police academy courses.
Shana Sankey (JSLS Program Coordinator)
Shana started her career at the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS), Bureau Motor Vehicles and Highway Patrol agencies in 1995. She began as a Data Entry Operator and ended her stint at ODPS as a Supervisor within the Vehicle Registration Section. She left ODPS in 2016 to open her own restaurant alongside her husband and after three years she decided to go back into the workforce. She started at Columbus State in 2019 in the Admissions/New Student Programs department. Shana embraced the Education culture and joined several committees on campus, such as the Staff Advisory Council, Student Conduct Hearing Board, and AAERG. Shana holds a bachelor’s degree in BA/MS with a minor in Human Resources, a MBA from Franklin University and recently finished her Certificate of Project Management from Columbus State. Shana enjoys giving back to her community as well. Participating in CSCC annual Day of Service, MLK Day of Service, a Columbus Promise Mentor, and mentoring within Women’s Connection. Shana also currently teaches the fundamentals of college prep through CSCC COLS classes. Her youngest daughter also attends CSCC and will be graduating with her Associates of Arts in Psychology in Spring 2024 and plans on attending The Ohio State University to study in Communications.
Kevin Hicks (Faculty)
After receiving his Bachelors in Social Science from Shawnee State University, Kevin chose to serve as a United States Air Force ARFF Firefighter in 2003. During his time as an enlisted firefighter, Kevin earned his Associates in Fire Science, EMT certification, and was promoted to the civilian equivalency of a Lieutenant. Following his active duty career in 2007, Kevin and his family moved back to Columbus where he continued his career with the Miami Township Fire Department. While serving as a member of the Miami Township Fire Department, Kevin earned his Paramedic certification. In 2011 Kevin joined the EMS Program at Columbus State. Kevin has also served as the EMS/Fire Coordinator at Pickaway Ross Vocational School. Kevin is an Ohio EMS Instructor and American Heart Association BLS/ACLS Instructor. Kevin is working on furthering his education as a nurse, enjoys fitness, and is in the process of writing a cookbook.
Dr. Karla Short (Annually Contracted Faculty)
Karla began her EMS career in 1995. She has both pre-hospital, in-hospital and outpatient care experience in EMS and perinatal care. She began teaching in 1996, as a CPR instructor and progressed to various roles at CSCC including Clinical Preceptor, full-time staff member Teaching Assistant, and Adjunct Faculty in both EMS Technology and Multi-Competency Health. Karla has a passion for understanding how people learn and helping students create effective learning and studying habits. She holds a Master’s in Education with a focus on Instructional Design for Online Learning and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Administration.
Bob Dickson (Adjunct Faculty/Field Clinical Coordinator)
Bob has been a Columbus Firefighter / Paramedic since 1988 and was a flight paramedic with Medflight between 1988 and 2004. He is currently Columbus States' EMS field clinical coordinator.
Creagh Boulger, MD (Medical Director)
Dr. Creagh Boulger completed her undergraduate training at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio, received her medical degree from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio and completed her emergency medicine residency training at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Following residency she accepted a faculty position within the Ohio State University Department of Emergency Medicine, where she is currently serves as Trauma Liaison, Associate Director of Ultrasound and Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Director. She has been assistant medical director for the paramedic training program at Columbus State Community College since 2010. She provides monthly EMS lectures to local departments and at regional conferences. She participates in delivery of the National Registry multiple times a year and sits on our EMS advisory board as well as serves as a member of the Center for EMS Board.
Dr. Brooke M. Moungey, MD, FACEP (Medical Director)
Dr. Moungey completed her medical training at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, followed by residency training in Emergency Medicine at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. During that time, she served as a Flight Physician for the University of Wisconsin’s Medflight program and subsequently completed an additional fellowship in Medical Education with a focus in Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
Dr. Moungey joined the core faculty at the Ohio State University in 2018 as an Assistant Professor in Emergency Medicine. Since that time, she has applied her expertise in curriculum design and implementation to the education of medical students and resident physicians and is now the EMS course director for the EM and EM/IM residency programs. Dr. Moungey has also continued her passion for EMS outside the hospital, and now serves as Associate Medical Director for Delaware County EMS and Columbus State Community College’s EMS programs.
Lane Berlin (Adjunct Faculty)
Lane gained his paramedic certification from Columbus State in 2005 and has been employed with the college since 2007. He has served in various roles including hospital preceptor and adjunct faculty. Lane has been involved in the EMS field since 2003. He is also a career firefighter/paramedic. He holds an Associate Degree in EMS/Fire Science and loves teaching. Lane is a CPR and ACLS Instructor as well as an EMS Instructor. He also enjoys maintaining his certifications in many disciplines as a Rescue Technician. The driving force of Lane’s motivation is to make a difference in the lives of strangers in need and to impart that drive in all of the students that he comes in contact with. In his free time, Lane enjoys billiards, woodworking, and spending time with his family.
Joe Bobot (Adjunct Faculty)
Joe has over 20 years of working experience in EMS. He has advanced training in the area of search and rescue and holds a certification as a Wilderness EMT and National Association for Search & Rescue (NASAR) SAR Technician Level II. Joe has responded to numerous search and rescue operations from New York during 9/11 to Mobile, Ala., after Hurricane Katrina.
Ray Di Lisi (Adjunct Faculty)
Ray works as a Firefighter and Paramedic with the Norwich Township Fire Department in Hilliard. He has been involved with Fire and EMS services since 1993, starting in the private sector then moving on to the fire service. Ray has an Associate Degree in Fire and EMS from Columbus State and has been employed with the college since 1995. He has been a lead instructor with our EMT Basic program since 2002 and continues to work with our paramedic students in both classroom and field experiences.
Joe Brown (Adjunct Faculty)
Joe Brown graduated from New Albany High School in 1988. During his senior year in high school, he began volunteering for Plain Township Fire Department. He completed EMT school in 1989 and graduated from Franklin County Firefighters/Grant Medical Center's Paramedic Program in 1991. In June of 1991 he became a fulltime firefighter at Plain Township. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1995 and captain in 2004. He currently serves as a Battalion Chief. Joe has also worked at Mount Carmel East and Children's Hospital emergency departments and was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for New Albany Police Department, which dispatched fire and EMS for Plain and Jefferson Township Fire Departments. He completed the Ohio Fire Executive program in 2004 and obtained his Associates Degree from Columbus State in 2009. Joe began working for Columbus State as a preceptor in 1993. He currently is an instructor for the EMT-B and paramedic class and teaches the Fire Company Officer I class.
Keith Gordon (Adjunct Faculty)
Keith has been in the EMS field since 1994. He successfully completed the Columbus State Paramedic program in 1996. He began his career in 1994 as an Advanced EMT, then Paramedic and Field Training Officer for Rural Metro. Seeking a more challenging career, he became employed at Mt. Carmel Connection in 1998 as a MICU Paramedic. He also became a Clinical Preceptor for Columbus State at this time. He is currently an EMT Instructor at Columbus State and a full time Lieutenant for Delaware County EMS.
Michael Hicks (Adjunct Faculty)
Michael has been working as a Licensed Professional Counselor for thirteen years while serving the community in a variety of mental health treatment facilities. Michael holds a Bachelor of Science in Employee Assistance Counseling from Franklin University and a Master of Science in Education and Allied Professions from the University of Dayton. Michael’s various counseling roles have provided him numerous opportunities to work alongside EMS professionals assisting patients in psychiatric crisis, including his work with Crisis Services and the Community Crisis Response (CCR) team at Netcare Access. Michael teaches the Emergency Psychiatric Intervention course in the EMS program at Columbus State. Michael is currently the Compliance Program Coordinator working as the primary point of contact for Columbus State employees in the administration of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as well as assisting in campus accessibility issues. Michael has over 5 years of experience teaching at the graduate level, volunteers his time to community organizations, is an avid runner and enjoys spending time with his dogs, family and friends.
Chris McKenzie (Adjunct Faculty)
Chris began his career in EMS as a student at Columbus State Community College, attending the EMT-B program in January of 1997, and continued through the EMT-I program and then the Paramedic program, graduating in July of 1998. As an instructor at CSCC he specializes in pediatric education for all levels of certification as well as functioning as one of the lead instructors in the Paramedic Program. He is a full time Paramedic/ Firefighter and a part time flight medic.
John Ross (Adjunct Faculty)
John is a Deputy Chief with the Westerville Division of Fire where he has proudly served since 1987. John is also a Flight Paramedic with Survival Flight, and previous served as a Mobile ICU Paramedic with Mt Carmel Connection and Fixed Wing Flight Paramedic with Critical Care Air Transport. John began working with Columbus State EMS since 2006 as an EMS Preceptor, Hospital Clinical Coordinator and Adjunct Faculty. John earned an Associate degree in EMS & Fire from Columbus State in 2000, a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Safety Mgt from Franklin University in 2002 and his Master’s Degree in Public Administration from American Public University in 2015. John serves on the following Central Ohio committees, Chair of the Columbus State EMS Advisory Committee, Chair Central Ohio EMS Coordinators Committee (COTS), Member State of Ohio Trauma Committee, Member Ohio Fire Chief's Association, Member Franklin County Fire Chief's Association, and member of the Central Ohio Trauma Systems Emergency Services Committee (COTS). John enjoys motorcycling and bicycling in his free time.
Paul Davis (Adjunct Faculty)
Paul is retired from the Columbus Div. of Fire after 33 years of service. He has been a paramedic since 1996 and a paramedic instructor since 1999. Paul currently teaches in the Paramedic Prep Class, ACLS, and various continuing education topics to area agencies.
Mark Blankenburg (Adjunct Faculty)
Mark began his EMS journey in 2007 as a secondary pursuit while studying Biology at the University of Toledo. Not long after becoming an EMT, Mark found he really enjoyed (and preferred) the combination of helping people while also solving problems in an unpredictable and ever-changing environment. In 2009, Mark and his wife moved to central Ohio where he continued working as an Advanced EMT and joined the Volunteer Ski Patrol at Snow Trails Ski Resort. After deciding he wanted to take on bigger challenges, Mark earned his Paramedic Certification from Columbus State in 2014. Returning to his Alma Mater in 2016, he began precepting with the Columbus State EMS program. It was at this time he discovered his love of educating and helping bring the next generation along. In 2020 he joined the Adjunct Faculty as an EMT Instructor while earning an associate degree from Columbus State in Emergency Medical Services. Mark continues to work clinically in the field as a Certified Flight Medic at MedFlight of Ohio, a Paramedic with Delaware County EMS, and Volunteer Outdoor Emergency Care Technician at Snow Trails Ski Resort.
Katie Connell RN, C-EFM, CLC (Adjunct Faculty/OB Clinical Instructor)
Katie completed her Bachelors in the Science of Nursing at Mt Carmel College of Nursing in 2004. She worked as a staff nurse for seven years in the Emergency Department at Mt Carmel East Hospital before transferring to Mt Carmel St Ann’s Labor and Delivery. Katie has worked as a Labor and Delivery nurse since 2011 and is currently at Mt Carmel East. She has been with the EMS program at Columbus State since 2013, where her focus is OB emergencies and OB clinical education. She has also worked as a part time, civilian, clinical instructor in OB for the City of Columbus Division of Fire since 2015. Katie is Certified in Electronic Fetal Monitoring, a Certified Lactation Counselor, and BLS/ACLS certified.
