Columbus State President David Harrison addresses community leaders at the college's announcement of a new career development center to be built on land purchased from First Church of God on the city's southeast side.
Joined by city and community leaders, Columbus State Community College announced today that it plans to create a specialized, 37-acre Career Development Center in southeast Columbus to educate students preparing for jobs in the construction trades or as first responders.
The college plans to develop the Career Development Center near the intersection of Refugee Road and Winchester Pike, providing modern and expanded learning spaces that support training for these in-demand jobs. Columbus State is in contract to purchase the land from First Church of God for $2.2 million, using bond proceeds approved by Franklin County voters in March 2020. The purchase is contingent on the rezoning of the property and other criteria.
“Construction trades professionals and first responders are critical to the wellness and prosperity of our region. This new center will provide pathways to good jobs and strong careers for young people just starting out and for adults transitioning to new opportunities,” said David Harrison, Columbus State president. “The Career Development Center is also a tremendous opportunity to deepen our partnerships with the City of Columbus, First Church of God, and the Eastland community as we collaborate to revitalize an important economic corridor in our region.”
The new location will house Columbus State’s degree and certificate programs in construction trades and for first responders, which collectively serve about 2,600 students per year. These programs include architectural drafting, civil engineering technology, construction management, environmental science, GIS, HVAC technology, landscape design and management, facilities maintenance, welding, surveying, criminal justice, emergency medical services and fire science. In addition to academic programs, the center also may offer community-facing programming and training courses informed by the needs of area residents and employers.
The City of Columbus launched a planning process for the Eastland community in August 2023 to create a community-driven vision for the area’s revitalization.
“Columbus State’s Career Development Center will be a linchpin development for a reimagined future of the Eastland area,” said Mayor Andrew J. Ginther. “A major hub for career training will bring opportunity to the surrounding neighborhoods while also delivering on an important need identified through the Eastland Community Plan process.”
Columbus State is planning an extensive community engagement process as part of the rezoning process with the city. The Career Development Center will include both indoor and outdoor training spaces needed for the skilled trades and first responders. The college is just beginning the process of planning specific buildings for the center.
Bishop Timothy J. Clarke, senior pastor of First Church of God, said the Career Development Center will help create positive momentum and economic opportunity for residents of the southeast side.
“First Church is delighted to work with Columbus State to expand career opportunities,” he said. “As the college’s Career Development Center takes shape, we’re looking forward to partnering with our new neighbor on this essential community investment.”
The project timeline will be determined in coming months.
The announcement of the new Columbus State Development Center marks a transformational opportunity for the Eastland community. This center will redefine education and serve as a cornerstone in Eastland’s revitalization plan, offering residents the chance to thrive for generations to come. As a State Senator, I take immense pride in the strides being made to enhance Columbus. As an Ohioan, I am thrilled by the prospects that lie ahead for our state.

Columbus State Community College’s plan to take an extensive approach to community engagement, regarding rezoning, is vital to development projects in large dense areas of Franklin County. Their efforts to bring postsecondary education opportunities to the community supports our initiative to cultivate the right resources directly around the residents who live and work there.
