An exchange program between Columbus State Community College and a higher education institution in Dresden, Germany, is beginning anew following the pandemic. Fifteen students and three faculty members from Columbus State’s sister institution – Berufsschulzentrum für Elektrotechnik Dresden – are visiting the college. Ten Columbus State students and four faculty members are part of this year’s exchange.

The cross-cultural exchange began in 2018 when 10 students and two educators from Dresden visited Columbus State. The following September, six faculty members and 10 students from Engineering, Computer Science, and Business Programs made Columbus State’s inaugural visit to Dresden. The program is designed to enhance international experiences for students. Dresden is one of 10 Greater Columbus Sister Cities International program members.

Speaking to Columbus City Council ahead of that visit, Paul Carringer, professor of Marketing, said, “Columbus State Community College is committed to providing the globally competent and competitive workers that attract international businesses to our region and support the competitiveness of our local and homegrown businesses. Whether as a customer, employer, or employee, the need for intercultural and global competence has become increasingly important.” Carringer is one of the founding faculty members of this study-abroad opportunity.

During this visit, the students are touring city sites, area businesses, and engineering technology labs at Columbus State and The Ohio State University. Kelly Hogan, associate vice president of Academic Affairs, is the administrator supporting the exchange. Faculty hosts are Adele Wright, Engineering Technology professor; Jeremy Banta, Engineering Technology assistant professor; LaSalle Jackson, Business Programs instructor; and Andy Woodmansee, Languages and Communication assistant professor.
