Check your blind spots to learn about unconscious bias Nov. 9

Student News | Tuesday, October 30, 2018

Columbus State will host a unique, interactive event next month when the “Check Your Blind Spots” tour stops on the Columbus Campus for a day.

“Blind spots” are our brains on autopilot. Experts say that an unconscious mind makes the majority of our decisions. It creates blind spots - unconscious biases that can narrow our vision and potentially influence our behaviors. Having grown up more aware of diversity issues than previous generations, many college students today might not think they have blind spots, but they may actually be quite surprised.

The “Check Your Blind Spots” event aims to give students the opportunity to learn about unconscious bias, discover some of their own, and become aware of companies doing the same. During the self-guided tour, you will be exposed to the nuances of unconscious bias. You will also learn about CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion™ and which companies are committed to affecting change toward a more inclusive society.

The free tour will empower you with the knowledge and resources needed to strip yourself of preexisting biases. You will better understand the role that you can play in advancing diversity and inclusion within our community and in your current and future workplaces.

“Check Your Blind Spots” will be set up in front of Nestor Hall on Friday, November 9 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  A sample of what you will see is in this two-minute video.
