1098-T Tax Reporting
Tax time is right around the corner. Your 1098-T, or "Tuition Payment Statement," is an important document that proves eligibility for student tax benefits, which may lower your tax liability. That means you may owe less and/or get more money back!
You can access an electronic copy of your 1098-T through Self-Service. To retrieve the form electronically, you need to first sign up or opt-in.
To retrieve your 1098-T Online:
1. Go to: www.cscc.edu and login to Self-Service:
- You will need your User ID and Password: If you do not remember your user name or password, click on the link at the bottom of the Self-Service sign in page: https://password.cscc.edu
2. Choose "Tax Information" from the Home Page or under the Financial Information tab:
- Tax Information (1098-T): Click on the link and it will take you to your Tax Information page. You will then see 1098-T Statments and a list of all the years and links to the forms you have available at Columbus State.
- If you have not previously given consent to view your 1098-T online, you will need to click on "Change Preferences" and review the statements, and if you agree with the first statement "Receive my 1098 only in electronic format" ,mark the box and click save.
Opting in for online access to your 1098-T provides important benefits:
- No risk of misplacing or damaging a paper document – you'll know right where to find your form for tax preparation
- You can access your 1098-T form anytime, 24/7
- You can print your form anytime and as many times as needed
Please note that students who DO NOT opt-in to retrieve their 1098-T form through Self-Service will receive a one-time mailing of their 1098-T. These forms will be mailed beginning January 31, and should arrive in early February. Students who opt-in to retrieve their form online will not receive a paper mailing.

The 1098-T form is a "Tuition Payments Statement" that higher educational institutions are required to provide to eligible students and the IRS. - In 2017 and prior, Columbus State Community College reported qualified tuition and related expenses in Box 2.
- Effective January 1, 2018 the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is requiring schools
to begin reporting payments made towards qualified tuition and related expenses in
Box 1. Payments made prior to 01/01/2018 for 2018 spring semester tuition will not
appear on the Form 1098-T either in 2017 or 2018 for the following reason
- On Form 1098-T for 2017, Columbus State Community College was reporting information in Box 2. Qualified tuition and related expenses form students that registered for Spring 2018 courses in 2017 were reported in Box 2 on the 2017 Form 1098-T
- Spring 2018 qualified tuition and related expenses that occurred in 2018 and paid in 2018 will be reported in Box 1 of the 1098-T
- While the transition can be confusing, nothing has been lost or misreported during the transition from reporting in Box 2 in 2017, to reporting payments in Box 1 in 2018.
- The 1098-T is an informational form only and claiming the correct deductions is the responsibility of the student. We encourage that you keep all your receipts of payments made towards your qualified tuition and present both records to you Tax Professional for assistance in completing your tax return.
- The Form 1098-T is a statement of adjusted tuition charged. The Form 1098-T is for use when preparing personal income taxes. The American Opportunity Credit and the Lifetime Learning Credit allow eligible taxpayers to claim a tax credit against their Federal Income Tax for qualified tuition and related expenses.
Columbus State Community College must file a Form 1098-T for each student enrolled for the given calendar year and for whom a reportable transaction is made. However, the IRS does not require Columbus State Community College to provide a Form 1098-T for:
- Courses for which no academic credit is offered, even if the student is otherwise enrolled in a degree program.
- Nonresident alien students
- Students whose qualified tuition and related expenses are entirely waived or paid entirely with scholarships and/or grants
- Students whose expences are covered by a formal 3rd party billing arrangement
If consent is received to provide the Form 1098-T online, the Form 1098-T will be available by the end of January through Self-Service. An email will be released to all students when they become available online. If consent is not received, the Form 1098-T will be mailed to the address on file by January 31st
CSCC will only mail the 1098-T to the address on your student file as of December 31st. CSCC will not do reprints of the 1098-T. If you do not receive your 1098-T due to an incorrect address, you will need to visit Self-Service and print your 1098-T online.

No, once you consent to receive your 1098-T online, your election stays in effect unless you request to have the election withdrawn.
No, your Form 1098-T reports all transactions that flowed through your student account during the calendar year. However, students typically incur other expenses that may also qualify for tax credits or deductions. The most common example is textbooks. For further information on "qualified" education expenses, please review IRS Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education. You may wish to consult with a tax professional.
- In attempt to make sure that the 1098-T is correct before it is released to the student and the IRS, CSCC is required by the IRS once a year to request you to review your address and SSN or ITIN number to verify they are correct.
- Also, The IRS can impose a penalty of $50 per information returned for missing or incorrect SSN/ITINs. If not provided , or your number does not appear to be accurate, we will contact you and request that you submit your number to the Colleges's Office of the Register on Form W-9S, Request for Taxpayer Identification Number. If you do not provide the requested information, you may be liable for the $50 penalty.
No, however CSCC will require you to complete the W9S form by checking the box that best explains why you have not provided your SSN or ITIN number.

There are a few different possibilities:
- You did not attend school that year
- You attended only Spring Semester and you were billed for the courses in the previous year
- You are either an international student or a US Citizen and currently do not have a valid SSN or ITIN number on file. You will need to complete the W9S and submit to the Office of the Register. The form can be found at https://www.cscc.edu/services/cashiersandstudentaccounting/
Form 1098-T reports only those transactions that posted and paid to your student account during the calendar year. Spring semester begins in January, if you registered for classes before December 31 and paid for your tuition in the following year, those amounts will not be reported on your 1098-T.
