Employers, students discover earn-and-learn program value during COVID

Update | Tuesday, November 24, 2020

Columbus State recently brought together industry employers, faculty, alumni, parents, and current and future students to learn about growing opportunities. The focus was on the modern manufacturing, logistics, distribution and technology industries and their importance amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Each event highlighted different academic pathways and corresponding earn-and-learn experiential learning programs at Columbus State. The Manufacturing & Logistics Night on October 19 highlighted the Modern Manufacturing Work-Study Program. The following evening, Technology Night highlighted the IT Flexible Apprenticeship Program

Both events hosted a student and employer panel moderated by David Cofer, project manager in Employer Engagement & Experiential Learning (EEEL). The panels allowed students to recap their program experiences, indicate struggles of starting a career during COVID-19, and emphasize the importance of these programs to launch a successful career. Employer-partner panelists included representatives from Honda, Nationwide, State Auto, Accenture, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Target. The employers complimented the quality of Columbus State’s students while also explaining how COVID-19 has impacted their industries and made talent like our students invaluable.

These events were made possible through the collaborative efforts of many campus departments, including EEEL, Conference & Events Services, Marketing and Communications, Admissions, Academic Affairs, Career Services, Grants, Talent Strategy, MEP, IT, and Integrated Systems. In addition to the panels, the virtual events featured academic speakers, college and programmatic overviews, and break-out sessions. The event combined reached more than 230 unique viewers and will continue to be viewed by prospective students, parents, and partners.
