Gospel Vocal Ensemble to perform May 1

Student News | Monday, April 25, 2022

Columbus State’s Gospel Vocal Ensemble, under the direction of Emma L. Easton, will present “I’ve Got a New Hattitude!” This “hattitude” of praise celebrates traditions in the Black church regarding headpieces and their implications on cultural expression over time.

Inspired by the book Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats, the performance will provide audience members with an appreciation for the various styles of gospel music through their correlating stories about hats. Special guests will include Lamonte Brown, Jesse Howell, and the Urban Strings of Columbus. Audience members are encouraged to wear a favorite hat to the free performance on Sunday, May 1 at 4 p.m. in Nestor Hall Auditorium.
