A veterinary technician is a medical professional who uses the skills of a nurse, dental hygienist, surgical assistant, radiology technician, laboratory technician, medical transcriptionist, pharmacy technician, client educator, and nutritionist. Columbus State's program prepares you to play an integral role in many areas of veterinary medicine, including clinical, surgical, laboratory and office procedures.
You'll take coursework ranging from veterinary anatomy, pharmacology, radiology and parasitology to business communication and clinical experience. As a graduate, you will be able to provide animal health care services including physical examination, administration of anesthesia, client communication and record keeping under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian.
But, most important, you will have acquired skills to ensure the health and well-being of animals.

- Columbus State's program has maintained full accreditation status from the American Veterinary Medical Association since 1974.
- Students may choose from more than 160 clinics to fulfill clinical experience requirements.
- Columbus State's facility includes a clinical laboratory; examination room; and surgical, radiology and treatment suites.
Graduates register with the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board (OVMLB) to become Registered Veterinary Technicians in the state of Ohio. Graduates are eligible to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) that is recognized in more than 40 states to certify veterinary technicians. Students must successfully pass the VTNE to be eligible for licensure in the state of Ohio. In Ohio, licensure from the OVMLB is needed for employment as a Registered Veterinary Technician.

The mission of Columbus State Community College Veterinary Technology Program is to provide an excellent education for veterinary technician students so they can perform as qualified entry-level veterinary technicians in various veterinary professional fields; to enhance the quality of veterinary services to the public through superior patient care; to interact with clients, patients and fellow veterinary associates in a professional and ethical manner; and to contribute to the veterinary profession and their community through life-long learning.
