Update | Tuesday, May 23, 2023

Students attending Silent Weekend gathered for a picture in Hocking Hills.

Columbus State’s American Sign Language (ASL) and Interpreter Education Program had a busy April. They sponsored “Silent Weekend” April 14-16 in the Hocking Hills. It allowed nearly 100 students to immerse themselves in a world of silence. And more than 2,200 attendees stopped by the DeafNation Expo at the Columbus Convention Center on April 29.

Students at Silent Weekend (pictured above) participated in games and activities and communicated using ASL. Campers varied from new language learners to advanced interpreting students. The annual event began in 1981. Total emersion in any language has proven to be an effective way to learn and master a new language. The DeafNation expo was the largest since 2017 for the American Sign Language/Interpreter Education students who volunteered alongside college staff and faculty members (pictured below). The ASL/IEP program and Accessibility Services department featured a table to provide information about the interpreting program and services for available for deaf students.
