Eight Dimensions of Wellness
Wellbeing is a broad, holistic concept that includes several dimensions of our lives.
We approach our wellbeing through the eight dimensions defined by SAMHSA (Substance
Abuse and Mental Health Services Association):
- Emotional
- Financial
- Social
- Spiritual
- Physical
- Occupational
- Intellectual
- Environmental

Your ability to understand your own emotions will better equip you to handle life’s stress and help you adapt to change or difficult times.
Gaining skills to alleviate financial stress and understanding your resources will help you stay focused. Feeling confident about the choices you make can help you enjoy life and feel more secure about your financial future.
Having healthy, nurturing, and supportive relationships and fostering community connections can provide a solid foundation for belonging.
Recognizing your sense of purpose and meaning in life can lead to finding balance, peace, and community. This may look different for each of us and is not necessarily religious, but an avenue for engagement, connection, and a sense of belonging.
A healthy body, good physical health habits, nutrition, exercise, and sleep habits all contribute to creating our overall sense of wellness. Sometimes we need help to create better routines and habits that will help us feel better about our bodies and our sense of balance.
Participating in activities that provide meaning and reflect your personal values, interests, and beliefs. The opportunity to contribute to your talents, skills, and knowledge through your professional career can bring a high level of career satisfaction.
Recognizing your creative abilities and engaging in different ideas, cultures, and perspectives can help you learn more about yourself, others and expand your skills and knowledge.
Accessing a safe, pleasant, and healthy environment – at work and at home – will help promote a holistic appreciation and stewardship of our environment and community. Preserving the areas where we live, learn and work contributes to our overall sense of wellbeing.
