About:
Derek Zeigler earned his B.A. in Psychology from Ohio University in 2010. He remained
at Ohio University for graduate school and earned his M.S. (2013) and Ph.D. (2016)
in Experimental Cognitive Psychology while working in the Structure, Concepts, & Perception
Laboratory. Derek is interested broadly in learning and memory. His current professional
interests focus on teaching and center on metacognition (the study of how people think
about and regulate their own learning). He is especially interested in helping students
become more effective learners by teaching evidence-based study strategies. Much of
his work involves designing and evaluating metacognitive interventions that can be
integrated directly into the classroom, with the goal of helping students become more
confident, independent, and lifelong learners.
The most rewarding part of Dr. Zeigler's work is the immediate gratification he receives
from teaching. He views his role as an advisor and mentor to his students as the most
important part of his job. In his spare time, Derek enjoys hiking, biking, and traveling
with his wife Annie. He is also a huge baseball fan. Go Guardians!
