Accessibility Network
Accessible Media is responsible for the conversion of textbooks and classroom materials into accessible formats for students with print-related disabilities who are approved for accommodations and are taking current semester courses. The team also facilitates Assistive Technology hardware and software training and management.
While accommodating actively enrolled students is our top priority, Accessible Media also consults with instructors and departments that are interested in proactively ensuring that materials are accessible from the start. This is more important now due to the DOJ web accessibility rulings that must be upheld by April 26, 2026 (https://www.ada.gov/resources/2024-03-08-web-rule/).
Previously embedded in Accessibility Services, the Accessible Media Team has been relocated to serve within Digital Education & Instructional Services (DEIS). To achieve the common goal of student success, both areas will work together as needed, striving for excellence in student outcomes and experiences in regard to Accessible Media related accommodations.
Incorporating Accessible Media into DEIS allows us to broaden our capacity for accessible media and digital accessibility. The AM team takes an active role in reviewing DEIS e-book projects for accessibility.
How can you help?
- Use the Accessibility 3Rs Framework
Remove - Remove content you do not need to share right now and delete content you no longer need.- Revise - Revise any digital content you need to share.
- Right first - Create new content with digital accessibility in mind.
- Utilize the Keep C.A.L.M. (Choosing Accessible Learning Materials) section to ensure content you are creating is accessible.
- Be proactive with Universal Design for Learning (UDL)! Focus on designing instruction to eliminate barriers and provide flexibility for all learners from the start, rather than waiting for specific needs to arise and then reacting with accommodations. This involves anticipating student variability, providing multiple means of representation, action and expression, and engagement, and ensuring clear learning goals. - Use the resources linked from the Accessibility Network Resources & Tips page to create accessible digital content from the start.
