Post-holiday cybersecurity alert

Update | Friday, January 14, 2022

A recent federal alert suggests consumers be wary of a gift card/USB scam over the past few months. The scam involves counterfeit Amazon gift cards and a USB device (see examples below). The USB devices were accompanied by fictitious letters purporting to be from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) providing information on COVID-19 guidelines. They may have also included forged Amazon thank you cards and counterfeit gift cards. When plugged into a computer, the USB device injects a series of keystrokes in order to download and execute a malware payload.

Do not plug any unknown USB devices into any computer system. If you find or receive an unsolicited USB device, report it to the IT Support Center at 614-287-5050. If you get a suspicious email, report it. Email abuse@cscc.edu, or call the IT Support Center.
