Student Employee Appreciation Week: recap and award winners

Update | Tuesday, May 4, 2021

Career Services celebrated Columbus State student employees in April. The week of activities included virtual events, a mini job fair, a coffee chat, and a Netflix Watch Party.

They also created a student-employee themed issue of the Daily Dose. A virtual awards ceremony capped off the week.

Feedback from the students included these comments:

  • Thank you so much for this special time! What a blast to see all the amazing people making a difference working while also completing their education at Columbus State!
  • I have learned so much. I think I’ve learned as much from this job experience, including technical skills, that I’ve learned from my classes.
  • I love the work I do. I love the team I work with. It’s a learning experience in everything I do, that I try to build on for my future career.
  • I have learned so much about Columbus State because of my role in guiding new students in their next steps.
  • I have grown a lot in this position, not just as a student but as a person.

The 2021 Student Employment Awards were held on April 16 (You may watch the recording here). Organizers say it was an inspiring event that captured the spirit of Student Employee Appreciation Week.

Center for Advising and Support & Exploration Coordinator Geoff Bauer, who was the 2020 Student Employment Supervisor of the Year, nominated Brieanna Taylor Jones as the Student Employee of the Year. Jones, known as BT, is in the New Student Programs department and was recognized as the Student Employee of the Year. A Veterinary Technology major, BT contributed to the success of New Student Orientations and became a natural leader among the student employees.

Bauer said, “BT cares deeply about helping others, has a high level of personal motivation to learn new things and to contribute to the team, and has high standards for her own work. She wants to help the Cougar Crew be a better work experience for everyone else long after she has graduated and moved on to bigger and better things.”

Matt Austin, manager of the Mid-Ohio Market at Columbus State, was named Student Employment Supervisor of the Year and was nominated by Lisa Phillips. Phillips said, “In a normal year, it requires providing an appropriate amount of challenge and support; in a pandemic year, not only must you honor this balance, but also provide stability in a time of great uncertainty. This is what sets Matt apart. He has created a stable and consistent environment and modeled what it means to be a team player.”

Career Services wants to congratulate all who were nominated and thank everyone who participated. Questions about student employment can be directed to Amanda Perk at aperk1@cscc.edu
