2021 Virtual Cougar 5K Challenge: May 1-9

Update | Monday, February 15, 2021

Got the winter and pandemic blahs? Maybe it’s time to start thinking about moving off the couch and dusting off your running or walking shoes to get ready for the 2021 Columbus State Cougar 5K Challenge. Following the guidance provided by the College, the race will be held virtually again this year. Sponsored by the Staff Advisory Council (SAC), you may participate in this year’s 5K by running or walking the race on your own time. Instead of running together on the Delaware Campus, each person can run or walk the 5K wherever – and whenever – they choose. You are asked to complete the 5K between Saturday, May 1 and Sunday, May 9.

If you need a place to run, Dustin Iacovone and Brian Seely have mapped out two potential 5K routes. One is at Highbanks Metro Park in Lewis Center (see the map). The other is at Mingo Park in Delaware
(see the map).

Proceeds provide book scholarships. The costs of books and course materials can be a significant hurdle to attending college and your participation and support of this race will help us to endow scholarships so all students can “cross the finish line” of their education. During a global pandemic in 2020, the College community stepped up and helped exceed our highest goal to date, allowing us to provide even more sponsorships than ever before, thanks to donors like you!

Because this is a virtual race, there will be inconsistencies in everyone's chosen course, daily weather, and tracking devices. Therefore, no placement medals will be awarded this year. Instead, everyone will receive a participation medal and race shirt. Prizes will be awarded to the team with the most members, the team that raises the most donation money, and the team with the most participants submit their race time.

There’s still plenty of time to sign up and encourage your friends and family to participate too. You can also encourage others to stay active by inviting them to race against you from a distance. The registration fee will be $30 until March 5. At that time, the fee will increase to $35 per entry. You can sign up to support the team of your choice, or you can sign up as an individual.  Students and part-time employees will be offered a discounted rate of $30 through race date.

Join SAC virtually this year so we can all stay healthy and continue supporting our students!
