First4Weeks: Week 2 Tips to Engage and Encourage Students

Update | Tuesday, September 8, 2020

The First4Weeks initiative is designed to leverage and expand on the great student success work we already have underway by implementing proven, research-based strategies that can be used by students, faculty, and College staff. The four categories of focus are:

*Build Relationships and Connect
*Engage and Stay Encouraged
*Communicate, Celebrate, and Aspire
*Support and Collaborate

During the first four weeks of this semester, you’ll find helpful tips and links here to help students succeed in all four categories. For Autumn Semester, they are tailored for the remote/online environment. This week’s tips can help engage and encourage students inside and outside of the classroom.

Ideas for faculty
A great example of engaging and encouraging that has been used by faculty involves communication the “why” behind assignments. In online classes without the benefit of lecture, this can often get lost. Help students connect individual assignments with the bigger picture for the course.

Ideas for staff
Listen and let a student talk through a problem. Help them talk their way through to the solution that is best for them.

With Autumn 2020 classes being held remotely, we want to be sure that students have resources to connect, communicate, collaborate – and succeed in this new learning environment. In addition to First4Weeks tips, more information about remote/online learning can be found at cscc.edu/LearnOn.
