It was mid-afternoon on Tuesday, October 1, when a student in a Union Hall nursing lab yelled that something was terribly wrong with another student who had her head down on a desk.
Fauna Stout, Allied Health professor, ran over and discovered the student was unresponsive and not breathing. She had someone call 911 while she and another student rushed her over to an exam table.
Stout began to administer first aid and CPR. Andrea Pifher, assistant professor and licensed respiratory therapist, was able to respond to provide ventilation and oxygen. Vincent Cocozza, program coordinator, and Tywan Banks, associate professor, also responded and assisted until Columbus State Police and EMT’s from the Columbus Division of Police arrived about six minutes later.
Kirk Dickerson, dean of Health and Human Services, recounted the situation for the Board of Trustees at the November Board meeting. He says, “Providing intervention during the first few minutes of any medical emergency is important to positive outcomes. In cases like this, it can sometimes save a person’s life.”
