Self-Defense Training Program
This empowering self-defense training for both men and women combines fitness training and martial arts, and is taught by experienced instructors on the Columbus Campus. You can take one or two classes, or progress through the levels of this free training, learning valuable techniques to keep yourself and others safe. This program is open to all faculty, staff, students, and community members over the age of 16 years old.
Level One: Grey Shirt –Participants begin at this level You will learn beginning techniques including:

Level Two: Yellow Shirt – advance after completing 20 Grey Shirt classes You will learn intermediate techniques of self-defense including:

About the Instructors
Sean Foster
Officer Sean Foster is a law enforcement professional with nine years of municipal and college law enforcement experience. He has been a Police Officer for the Columbus State Police Department for the past five years. Foster is certified as a Defensive Tactics and Impact Weapons Instructor through the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy and conducts regular in-service defensive tactics training. Sean is Gracie Survival Tactics Certified. When not on campus, he trains to compete in Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a Brown Belt and as an amateur Mixed Martial Arts athlete in Ohio; he is the current 155lb. Amateur MMA Champion in Ohio.
Jason Apt
Jason Apt is an athletic conditioning and recreation specialist at Columbus State. Apt earned his associate degree in Sport and Exercise Studies from CSCC, his B.S.in Sport Management from Union Institute and University, and his Master’s degree in Exercise Science from California University of Pennsylvania. He is also a USAW Olympic Lifting Coach. Apt has worked for Columbus State for eight years and serves as the head strength coach for the Athletics Department. Apt also has more than 20 years of martial arts training in Karate, boxing, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai and is Gracie Survival Tactics Certified.
Devan Quitt'er
Devan Quitt'er is an alumni of CSCC with a degree in American Sign Language. She is a full-time Dispatcher in the Columbus State Police Department where she is also a Defensive Tactics Instructor. Her background in Martial Arts is extensive and includes over six years of wresting and she trains in Judo and is a Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Ronin Training Center. She competes internationally in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the GF Team in Columbus, Ohio under Vitor Oliveira. Devan also trains individually with Coaches Jason and Sean to continually improve her skills. Devan has also recently become Gracie Survival Tactics Certified which will only increase her ability to teach self defense skills to the community.
