New trees on campus following annual Earth Day event

Columbus State’s Sustainability Group went all out, holding its second annual Earth Day celebration on April 22. In addition to activities in the courtyard, more than 30 trees were planted around the Columbus Campus. (See the tree list.) Funding was provided by the Youth Climate Action Fund grant awarded by the city of Columbus. Bloomberg Philanthropies launched the Youth Climate Action Fund to help empower the next generation of climate leaders.

For the project, the Sustainability Group worked with Simply Living as a non-profit fiscal agent and partnered with Facilities Management to execute the tree plantings. Facilities choose the plants and locations, with a strong emphasis on native plants, which was the grant focus and student goal. Alistair Reynolds, regional forester with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, provided instruction during the plantings.
