Prairie Norton
Columbus State's ESL Afterschool Communities (ESLAsC) program at Prairie Norton is
supported by a 5-year Ohio Department of Education 21st Century Community Learning
Center Grant. It is located at Prairie Norton Elementary in the South-Western City
school district. The program serves students in grades 2nd through 4th.
ESLAsC's 3 key objectives for the program are academic enrichment, increase resiliency,
and family supportive services. The objectives are addressed throughout the year and
individualized to student and family needs. Students use many on-site tools to help
increase their math and reading skills. Part of each day is dedicated to reading and
building vocabulary. In addition to language acquisition, students use written responses
to help display content knowledge and comprehension. Building on basic math skills
with drills, games and online activities are also a daily component of learning. Students
attend many field trips during the year and are exposed to a broad array of youth
development programming. Parents are offered links to school, workshops and community
resources.
Columbus State's ESLAsC at Prairie Norton specifically partners with South-Western
City Schools (SWCS). SWCS provides the space for the programming and also partners with parent
workshops and activities. A classroom teacher delivers daily, direct instruction to
the students afterschool. The teacher affords consistent academic support to the program
and helps link program curriculum to school day academics. ESLAsC's staff is either
physically in the school day classrooms weekly, or are in contact with teachers and
administrators through e-mail. We are committed to keeping communications from school
to home a priority. We continue to strive to maintain a safe, caring, learning environment
for our students and their families.
