FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
When a critical situation strikes a college campus, experts should be
ready with the latest psychological training and insight available.
A proactive approach in Ohio will offer comprehensive training to
selected staff members at colleges and universities in the state.
The first step in the process is the day-long "Joining Forces - College
and University Psychological First Aid" training session on Wednesday.
This initial pilot program will train about two dozen experts, including
mental health experts and higher education counselors. The
newly-developed "Psychological First Aid" manual for use during critical
incidents will be the guide. It's sort of a “training the trainer”
concept.
Participants will then evaluate the training and make adjustments to
curriculum and delivery. The program will eventually be offered to all
Ohio colleges and universities wanting training for their experts.
That session will be held in the next few months and is expected to
attract 200 or more people. A date and location have not been selected.
The long-range plan calls for forming regional teams that could respond
to any Ohio college to assist in the aftermath of a situation and the
emotional needs that could arise.
This process is a spinoff of the Governor's task force on campus
security.
