The Play’s the Thing

Thousands of students get an education at Columbus State, but Sharon Reeb got to see her homework on the stage.

Reeb, came to Columbus State after a 16-year career as a fundraiser with United Way and a stint as a part-time caterer. She decided to get a teaching certificate, and started her new degree at Columbus State. She maintained an A average – and the school’s theatre group decided to perform a play she wrote, “Bad Girl Barbie.”

She hopes to continue introducing children to theater.

“There’s a light that goes on,” Reeb said. “And once it’s on, it stays on.”

Two Big Steps

Ricardo Frazier came to Columbus State in 2005, after seeing an ad in the newspaper. Frazier, now 37, says he wasn’t working then and realized he needed to get back on track.

First, he enrolled in Columbus State’s Orientation to Trades and Apprenticeships program, which teaches work skills and gets students ready for apprenticeships in the skilled trades. After that, he stayed at Columbus State to get his GED.

“They want to see you succeed, and that makes a big difference,” Frazier says.
