GIS is used to map, manage, manipulate, maintain and model spatial data. GIS is
used by cities to keep track of roads, parcels and utilities. Geographers use
GIS to identify and explain patterns across the land. Farmers use GIS to
precisely determine and control treatment coverage on their fields. Emergency
personnel use GIS to help respond more quickly and effectively to events. GIS is
used by people in the health care industry, mining, forestry, real estate, Web,
government, engineering, natural resources, transportation and utilities
industries to solve their need to manage location based information. Some

Geographic maps.
Columbus State Community College offers a 9-month certificate and a 2-year
degree program in GIS. Students will be introduced to the latest technology and
software in GIS, as well as provided with a strong background in the fundamental
concepts that make GIS work. With these skills and knowledge graduates of the CS
GIS program will be at a competitive advantage for jobs in this rapidly
