Welcome to the Human Resources Management Technology degree program website! I’m Reuel Barksdale, the Program Coordinator, and I’d like to tell you a little bit about what we have to offer. Human Resources is a multi-faceted area of business, and many folks don’t really understand exactly what it is we do. Human resources is often perceived as, “those people who do the hiring and firing,” but there is so much more to our field.
The goal of our Program is to prepare you to be a Human Resources Generalist – a person who can “do it all.” Although large corporations often have HR departments with many people, small to midsized companies usually have a, “one-person show,” and a Generalist is what they need The HR Generalist is involved in recruiting, selection, affirmative action and equal employment opportunity, benefits administration, compensation administration, employee relations, labor relations, employee training, safety, strategic planning, policy and procedure writing, employee records management, and ensuring that the organization is in compliance with myriad laws and legal issues surrounding the employee/employer relationship. While human resources is usually perceived as a “cost center” as opposed to a “profit center,” a human resource professional, well versed in all of these areas, can save a company a lot of money.
Our Program is highly technical, and focuses heavily on the laws and legal issues surrounding the employee/employer relationship, because that is the aspect that costs employers millions of dollars each year. We focus on writing policies, procedures, and programs that allow employers to engage in the employee/employer relationship legally and ethically. When you graduate from our Program, you have a portfolio you can show potential employers that contains policies and procedures you have written, job descriptions and job specifications you have written, training programs you have developed, and many other examples of HR projects that they need and want.
The Human Resources Management Technology degree program at Columbus State is considered by many students to be “tough.” We do set high standards of performance in our core classes, and we do hold all students to those standards – and our graduates compete successfully with graduates of 4-year institutions for HR management level positions. Not only does our Program prepare you for today’s job market, it also prepares you to succeed at a 4-year institution to which you may transfer.
