A teacher who can arouse a feeling for one single good action, for one single poem, accomplishes more than he who fills our memory with rows on rows of natural objects, classified with name and form.
--Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Elective Affinities

This is where you can find out who teaches in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department and learn a little about them.

Research Interests/Other Interests I Have

Obviously, I am interested in political science and politics: I was a Ford Foundation Fellow in the Michigan Senate (1975) as an intern for Republican Senate Minority Leader Robert Vanderlaan. In 1992 I was the Democratic candidate for Congress in the 12th District, and in 1995 I ran for election to the Columbus School Board. I have written extensively about political theory, copublished a scholarly article on health-care policy, and made presentations at academic conferences on political theory, electoral politics, and public policy.

If you want to know more about me, you can read my weekly column, "Bob Bites Back," in the Columbus Alive! newspaper. I also have a public access cable program called "From the Democratic Left" on channel 21 (Mondays at 8 p.m. and Thursdays at 11 a.m.), and a radio talk show called "Fight Back!" on WSMZ 103.1 (call in Sundays at 821-1031 between 6 and 7 p.m). I publish and edit The Free Press, a quarterly journal of opinion and new analysis. It is on the web at www.freepress.org .

Most importantly, I live with a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig named Iggy who has his own Animal Rights Update on the Columbus Free Press.

In my other life, I like watching football (Green Bay Packers, Cleveland Browns, Ohio State, Tennessee), basketball (I love college hoops, shoot the rock!), baseball (Reds and Indians), and hockey (Avalanche, Flyers, and I was a huge Nordique fan). I bike, golf, play basketball and softball, and listen to heavy metal and alternative music (Black Sabbath, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Venom, Metallica, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam).

B.A., The Ohio State University, Anthropology
M.A., The Ohio State University, Cultural Anthropology
Ph.D., The Ohio State University, Cultural Anthropology

Research Interests/Other Interests I Have

My research interests are multicultural and multilingual education, sociolinguistics, folklore, nonverbal communication, and refugee studies.

Geographically speaking, I am interested in the southwestern US, in MesoAmerica (particularly Mayan culture), and Southeast Asia (particularly Laotian culture).

Language and culture interest me a great deal. I am currently attempting to learn some ASL (notice the word "attempting" :) I also enjoy mystery stories. Old favorites include Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie. I really like some of the newer ones that mix culture with mystery: such as the Dene Leaphorn and Chee stories (Tony Hillerman); and the intrepid Victorian lady Egyptologist Amelia Peabody Emerson (Elizabeth Peters). Sometimes machines and I do NOT get along. I strongly suspect that there are electronic gods and goddesses and that I have, at some time in my life, greatly offended them. I love to people watch. And I have found that life IS stranger than fiction...

Degrees I've Earned

B.S., Business Administration/Management, West Liberty State College
M.A., Geography, The Ohio State University
Ph.D., Geography, The Ohio State University

Research Interests/Other Interests I Have

My current research interests include the evolution and development of the urban system of the United States since the end of World War II -- specifically, the impact that transportation and communications have had on the changing pattern of population growth for metropolitan areas throughout the United States and the corresponding influence that the largest metropolitan areas have had (via spatial interaction patterns) on the rest of the U. S. urban system.

Other geographic areas of academic interest include (but not limited to):

  • Economic Growth and Development
  • Demography
  • Geography of Transportation and Technology
  • Cultural, Social, and HistoricalGeography
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  • Geographic Education

Personal areas of geographic interest include the humanistic elements of geography -- the impact that places have on the development of personality and the role that space and place have in shaping an individual's perception of reality; geographic themes and motifs that commonly occur in literature and poetry; and the role that a geographic perspective/viewpoint has in creative enterprises and personal relationships.

Research Interests/Other Interests I Have

I am most interested in the positive perspective of psychology that seeks to discover the experiences, assets, and resources that promote happiness, secure attachment, and optimal human performance. In the journal American Annals of the Deaf you will find the results of a positive psychology research study that two colleagues and I completed entitled, Signs of resilience: Assets that support Deaf success in bridging the Deaf and hearing worlds.

Another academic interest of mine is the study of the adaptive unconscious. I really like Malcolm Gladwell's (2005) book, Blink: The power of thinking without thinking. I also enjoy studying methods for improving the academic achievement of college students. Several of my educational psychology students and I created a web site to inspire academic excellence. We hope you enjoy a site visit at http://global.cscc.edu/social/ success/.

Research Interests/Other Interests I Have

Sorry, I have no research interests. Experiencing life is much more fun than documenting it! I collect frequent flier miles and use them as often as possible. Escaping is important, and the process can be as rewarding as the destination.

If you have been avoiding Econ but aren't afraid to work at it, come and see me. My students have TONS to do, but they also learn a lot about themselves, why there's no "free lunch" and that all of us face a series of (often tough) choices as we meander though our lives. The fact of the matter is that you can run but you can't hide from Economics. Did you ever have everything you wanted? Do you always agree with your family and friends (much less some bunch of politicians ...) about what's "really important?" How long is the list of thing you're giving up in order to pursue your education? This is the stuff of our Econ courses. Complex. Frustrating. Sometimes controversial. Never dull.
