Regional poetry slam set for Friday and Saturday
Fast-paced poetry is about to take over as more than 100 people converge at Columbus
State for the annual Rustbelt Regional Poetry Slam this weekend.
Poetry slams are competitions where poets recite original work and then are judged
on a scale from zero to 10 by randomly selected audience members. The slams got their
start in Chicago in the mid ‘80s. Since then, they’ve grown in popularity – with Columbus
now a regular regional stop on the national circuit.
At least 15 teams from across the Midwest will take part in the competition. Preliminary
bouts will be held at 7:00 p.m. June 1, and 1:00 p.m. June 2. Finals will be at 7:00 p.m. June 2. All events are free and will be held in the Nestor
Hall lounges and auditorium. Need more information? Go online here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/Rustbelt2011/
Project Linus creates blankets for kids
The Columbus State Leadership Society (CSLS) partnered with the Student Ambassador
Program for a day of community service May 12, making twenty soft fleece blankets
for the Columbus Chapter of Project Linus. Project Linus is a non-profit volunteer
organization that helps provide children who are ill or otherwise in need with blankets
that are made by its volunteers. It is named for the Charlie Brown comics character
Linus, who was never without his trusty blanket. Forty-six students from the Leadership
Society and 23 Student Ambassadors had a day of fellowship and productivity serving
the community. Students pictured with one of their creations are, from left: Mariam Bahova, Robert McFarland, Simone Burly, Sharon Nolen, Andrew Gorring, Tsung
