Learning ASL interpreting through emergency drills and scavenger hunts

Students in the Interpreter Education Program participated in an emergency simulation at the John Glenn Columbus International Airport

Columbus State students in the Interpreter Education Program, which teaches students to become American Sign Language interpreters, are finding creative ways to build their skills. On September 20, four ASL Interpreting students had the privilege of putting their skills to work during a FAA-mandated TSA Emergency Response Simulation at the John Glenn Columbus International Airport. The students were asked to interpret throughout the volunteer orientation and the simulated plane crash. Some 80 volunteers were made-up with fake injuries for the simulation, and Columbus State students interpreted for volunteers so the emergency responders would see what it would be like to respond to an emergency situation with a diverse group of people with a varying needs. This was the first collaboration between Columbus State's interpreter education students and TSA, and the College hopes it will become an ongoing partnership.

Meanwhile, another group of ASL interpreting students used a class project to create an online resource for others learning sign language. Heidi Kinnamon, an adjunct ASL instructor, had students start with a scavenger hunt to find various objects around campus. Students took photos with their phones. Then, each student crafted a backstory for their photo, including handshapes to represent how the object looks or moves. After discussion and feedback, students recorded themselves narrating each slide in sign language. The video is on YouTube, with tags to help others find it.
