pyramid in Guatemala
The course will be taught online Spring semester 2014 during the Second 8-week term, and culminate in the 10-day study abroad May 16 through 25.

The tour and corresponding course are designed to introduce students to the magnificent wonders of Mayan culture past and present, and develop a deeper understanding of the issues facing this indigenous population.

The travel group will visit various locations throughout Guatemala, and engage in a wide variety of activities meant to introduce participants to the lives and culture of Mayan peoples throughout Guatemala, including Antigua, Guatemala City, San Lucas Toliman, and Flores.

Just a few of the highlights include climbing the active volcano Pacaya, meeting local artisans, engaging in service learning projects at the San Lucas Toliman Mission, special talks by local residents, a boat tour of Lake Atitlan, a midnight jungle tour, a guided tour at the Tikal National Park, early morning bird watching in the jungle, and visits to the homes of indigenous Mayans.

The cost of the trip is $2,350, which includes airfare, in-country transportation, most meals, lodging, tips, and guided tour fees. It does not include tuition, textbooks, a passport, excess baggage fees, some meals, or suggested vaccinations.

For more information on this exciting and enriching study abroad opportunity, contact the lead faculty member Rebecca Mobley.
