What is the Preferred Pathway® Program?

Preferred Pathway® is an innovative set of Pre-Major tracks that guarantee access to an Ohio State University (OSU) baccalaureate degree for qualified students transferring from Columbus State Community College (CSCC). The program allows a smooth transition from CSCC to OSU that is both time and cost efficient.

What is a Preferred Pathway®, Pre-Major track?

Pre-Major tracks are the preferred pathway to an OSU degree. Pre-Major tracks are clear and direct degree plans with specific course details by program of interest. List of Pre-Major tracks for Associate of Arts & Associate of Science majors.

Associate of Applied Science programs have yet to be determined.

How is Preferred Pathway® different from a regular transfer to OSU?

Students have long been able to start at CSCC and then transfer to OSU to finish their bachelor's degree. The Preferred Pathway® Program makes it even easier. The Preferred Pathway® Program provides a guaranteed, guided route to an OSU baccalaureate degree for program participants.

Am I eligible for the Preferred Pathway® Program?

Yes, all students are eligible to follow a Preferred Pathway® to OSU. However, a select group of students may meet the criteria to participate in the program as Preferred Pathway® Scholars.

Do I need to be a full-time to be a Preferred Pathway® Student?

All students, part-time or full-time (current or future), are eligible to participate in the Preferred Pathway® Program. Preferred Pathway® Scholars must be full-time and meet additional requirements.

What are the student benefits in the Preferred Pathway® Program?

Preferred Pathway® Program students receive:

  • Guaranteed admission to OSU.
  • Joint advising from CSCC and OSU to help ensure a smooth transition.
  • On-site availability of OSU advisors at CSCC’s Downtown and Delaware campuses to help with advising and academic support.

Does participating in the Preferred Pathway® Program guarantee admission to OSU?

Please note that some colleges within The Ohio State University are selective and require higher grade point averages for acceptance. Pre-major tracks and collaborative advising are resources for students to better understand academic and other requirements to be accepted into a specific major at OSU.

Do I need to apply for the Preferred Pathway® Program?

There is no application necessary to be a Preferred Pathway® Program student. All students interested in transferring to OSU are eligible to follow a Pre-Major track as a Preferred Pathway® Program student. However, to participate in the program as a Preferred Pathway® Scholar, an application is required.

Students interested in the Preferred Pathway® Program must first apply and be accepted to Columbus State. (Online Application). Once you receive notification that you are accepted to the college, follow the Get Started Guide, and meet with an academic advisor to discuss your Pre-Major-track.

A separate application is required for students interested in participating in the program as Preferred Pathway® Scholars.

Will I take classes at CSCC or OSU?

Dual enrollment is not the intent for the Preferred Pathway® Program. Participants will take classes at CSCC only prior to transferring to OSU.

How will dual advising work?

Pre-Majors tracks will provide a guaranteed, guided route, from CSCC to OSU. Other resources include: an OSU visiting advisor program, a CSCC Program Coordinator, and an OSU Program Coordinator.

A select group of students (Preferred Pathway® Scholars) will also have access to an advisor through events and activities jointly offered with OSU.

Preferred Pathway® Scholars

What are Preferred Pathway® Scholars?

Preferred Pathway® Scholars are emerging CSCC student leaders participating in a closely advised program designed to complement the Preferred Pathway® partnership with OSU. Preferred Pathway® Scholars must submit an application, meet specific eligibility criteria, and commit to ongoing requirements. Preferred Pathway® Scholars have access to additional benefits in the Preferred Pathway® Program.

What is the difference between a Preferred Pathway® Program Student and a Scholar?

Although any student can follow the Preferred Pathway®, certain students will be selected as Preferred Pathway® Scholars. Preferred Pathway® Scholars must meet eligibility criteria and commitment requirements. Preferred Pathway® Scholars will have access to additional services and resources.

Am I eligible for the Preferred Pathway® Scholars Program?

Preferred Pathway® Scholars will need to meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Demonstrate College Readiness through the COMPASS placement test, ACT, or AP scores (ENGL 1100, MATH 1075/1148, and no Reading required).
  • Commit to full-time enrollment.
  • First Time in College - recent high school graduate.

What are the requirements for the Preferred Pathway® Scholars Program?

Preferred Pathway® Scholars will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Full-time enrollment (12 credit hours or more).
  • Register for Freshman Seminar and English courses reserved for Preferred Pathway® Scholars.
  • Attend a Preferred Pathway® Scholar Orientation at OSU.
  • Maintain satisfactory academic status in preparation for intended program requirements.
  • Actively contribute to a campus student club or organization of their choice.
  • Regularly attend Preferred Pathway® Scholar events and activities.
  • Participate in required Student Success Workshops.
  • Meet with designated Academic Advisor as required.

What is the time commitment for the Preferred Pathway® Scholars Program?

Preferred Pathway® Scholars are full-time students. Full-time students typically spend at least 15 hours a week in class and 30 hours a week on homework outside of class. While there is no set time commitment for additional requirements, Preferred Pathway® Scholars will be encouraged to take advantage of special opportunities that may require additional time commitments.

What are the Scholar benefits in the Preferred Pathway® Program?

Preferred Pathway® Scholars receive:

  • Dual Advising with OSU and a designated Preferred Pathway® Scholar Advisor at CSCC.
  • Invitation to Preferred Pathway® Scholar social networks and special events.
  • Customized student ID for access to exclusive resources at CSCC and OSU.
  • Access to OSU library, selected athletic events, and other First Year Experience activities.

Does participating in the Preferred Pathway® Scholars Program guarantee admission to OSU?

Preferred Pathway® Scholars receive dual and intensive advising with access to special benefits including activities, resources, and services at CSCC and OSU. These special benefits will enhance leadership development, improve transfer planning awareness, and support student success.

Do I need to apply for the Preferred Pathway® Scholars Program?

Yes, to participate in the Preferred Pathway® Program as a Preferred Pathway® Scholar, an application is required. Students interested in the Preferred Pathway® Program must first apply and be accepted to Columbus State Community College. (Online Application). Once you receive notification that you are accepted to the college, follow the Get Started Guide, and submit a Preferred Pathway® Scholar application. A new Preferred Pathway® Scholars class begins each autumn term.
