This course covers the potential for life elsewhere in the universe based on the
discovery of extra-solar planets and the nature of life on Earth.

ASTR 1161 The Solar System (A, SP, SU)
3 credits
This course offers an introduction to astronomy focusing on the solar system. Topics
include the night sky, seasons, phases, eclipses; gravity, light and telescopes; solar
system origins; planets, moons, rings, asteroids, comets, and exoplanets. This course
may require additional time outside of scheduled class hours.

ASTR 1162 Stars and Galaxies (A, SP, SU)
3 credits
This course explores stars, galaxies, and cosmology. Topics include gravity and light;
the Sun; stellar properties, structure, and evolution; star formation and star death;
black holes, white dwarfs, and neutron stars; galaxies and galaxy formation; structure,
history, and future of the universe. This course may require additional time outside
of scheduled class hours.
