Women's Herstory Month

women's herstory monthMarch is Women’s “Herstory” Month, and Columbus State will celebrate the achievement of women with several special events, culminating with the Leadership Awards and Celebration, on Wednesday, March 26.

Now is the time to nominate a Columbus State student, faculty or staff member for the Outstanding Woman Leader Award by completing and submitting a nomination form. Multiple winners will be named. Nominations are also being sought for a faculty or staff member who has worked at Columbus State for at least five years and demonstrates a legacy in leadership. You can complete and submit a nomination for the Legacy in Leadership Award online here. Nominations are due by Friday, March 7!

Women’s Herstory Month 2014 “Take Action: Character, Courage, Commitment,” is co-sponsored by the offices of Global Diversity and Inclusion and Student Engagement and Leadership (SEaL). All events are free and open to the public. The schedule is as follows:

Monday, March 3 (Delaware Campus)

Read Across America Day, “Poem in Your Pocket” Event
All day, Delaware Learning Center

Celebrate Women’s Herstory Month and Read Across America Day with a ‘Poem in Your Pocket’ by a female author! Come to the Delaware Learning Center and take an excerpt of a poem with you for the day! Read it, share it with others, and celebrate womens’ contributions to the world of reading.

Wednesday, March 5 (Columbus Campus) and Thursday, March 6 (Delaware Campus)

Take Action: International Women’s Day-Honor Diaries Screening and Panel Discussion

Honor Diaries is the first film to break the silence on ‘honor violence’ against women and girls. Honor Diaries is more than a movie; it is a movement to save women and girls from human rights abuses around the world and here in America.

Wednesday, March 19

Take Action: Wellness and Empowerment Fair, featuring My Very Own Blanket
11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Delaware Hall Gymnasium Moved to Nestor Hall, West Lounge

This event focuses on the education, empowerment, health and well-being of women of all ages. Maintaining good health and wellness takes a conscious effort and dedication! Participants will be empowered to achieve their full potential by living holistically. In addition to the fair, participants can impact their community by creating a blanket for a youth in foster care; the blankets will benefit My Very Own Blanket.

Wednesday, March 19 (Delaware Campus) and Monday, March 24 (Columbus Campus)

Take Action: Show Your Courage and Donate Blood

Everyone at Columbus State is given an opportunity to enhance the lives of others by “giving the gift of life” during regularly scheduled Blood Drives. Feel free to give of yourself and receive rewarding gratification that only giving brings.

Thursday, March 20 (Delaware Campus)

Take Action: Women’s Wellness and Empowerment Day-Free Yoga Class presented by Perfect Harmony Fitness and Yoga

11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
Moeller Hall 111&112

Engage your mind, body, and spirit with the practice of yoga! Two, 45-minute classes will be offered with instruction by Alice Drew Yoder of Perfect Harmony Fitness and Yoga, LLC. Pre-registration is encouraged, please contact the Delaware SEaL office at (740) 203-8175 for details.

Women’s Herstory Month: Leadership Awards and Celebration
Featuring Keynote Speaker Dawn Tyler Lee, Senior Vice President of Community Impact, United Way of Central Ohio
11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. (Speed Networking is available from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in WD 409)
Workforce Development Center, Ballroom

Celebrate the Outstanding Women Leaders of Columbus State! Both employees and students will be recognized for their leadership and achievements. Light refreshments will be served.

Event is free and open to the public. Nominate an outstanding woman by March 7, 2014.

Thursday, March 27 (Delaware Campus)

Take Action: Coffeehouse Open Mic-presented by Columbus State and OSU Marion
12:30 - 2 p.m.
Moeller Hall 111 and 112

A great opportunity to have your voice heard! Whether it’s poetry, music, or another creative talent, students, faculty, and staff are welcome to share their talents at the open mic. While everyone is welcome to participate, the theme of March’s open mic is experiences of Character, Courage, and Commitment. Be the star or sit back and enjoy the show! Live musical entertainment and light refreshments will be available.
