Sixty graduate students from Ohio University’s Student Affairs program recently visited Columbus State to find out how community colleges address work in advising, diversity initiatives, career services, student advocacy and more. 

A panel made up of Thomas Giles, assistant director of Admissions; Molly Ward, director of CASE; Tari Blaney, director of Student Advocacy; Kimberly Rhyan, Director of SEaL; Brett Welsh, director of the Global Diversity and Inclusion Center, and Ashley Sweaney, supervisor of Career Services answered the grad students’ questions. The students left with a new appreciation of the similarities and differences between university and community college students, departments, and initiatives.

 

 

Quality Team Awards applications due April 21

The deadline is quickly approaching for applications to the 2017 Quality Improvement Team Awards. The applications are open to teams of three or more employees to submit their best work from the previous year.

The annual Quality Team Awards recognize groups that have had the most impact or continuous improvement on the College and on students, by incorporating the values and strategic goals set forth by the Board of Trustees. Teams are encouraged to think outside the box and showcase the best that Columbus State has to offer. A Gold Team Award and two Silver Team Awards will be selected from those submitted. Cash awards of $4,000 (one gold) and $2,000 (two silver) are also made to the winning teams. The awards will be given at the annual luncheon on Tuesday, June 13. The application can be found online here. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 21.

Reminder: Reception for Hooker-Myers Friday

Please join the Digital Education and Instructional Services (DEIS) Department to wish Mary Hooker-Myers a fond farewell into her upcoming retirement. A reception will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 31, in CT 108.

The Admissions Department will close at 3:30 p.m. today, Thursday, March 30, for department training.

 

Nominations open for Student Leadership and Service Awards

Student Life is seeking nominations for outstanding achievement in co-curricular experiences. The Student Leadership and Service Awards are an opportunity for peers and campus community members to recognize the achievements of students, organizations, and advisors. 

Columbus State students do amazing work to enhance student life at Columbus State. Not only do our students gain positive experiences from being involved, but their co-curricular activities provide valuable skills and abilities that complement the classroom experience and fulfill the mission of the college.

To be eligible for awards, students must be enrolled part-time or fulltime in good academic standing. Clubs must be active and recognized as a three- or four-star club. Categories are:

  • Student Club of the Year
  • New Club of the Year
  • Club Event of the Year
  • Club President of the Year
  • Club Officer/Member of the Year
  • Club Advisor(s) of the Year
  • Student Leadership and Service Legacy Award
  • Leadership Certificate Program (self-nomination)
  • Serve Our Community Honor Roll (self-nomination)
  • Spirit of Inclusion (New for 2017)

Departments invited to Spring Fling

Student Engagement and Leadership (SEaL) invites campus departments and organizations to participate in the annual Spring Fling and Service Fair, Monday, April 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the courtyard area. The event is free and open to all Columbus State students and employees. In the event of rain, Spring Fling will be moved indoors to the Nestor Hall Student Lounges.

The event is open to college departments, local community businesses, nonprofit organizations, and our partner universities. Recommend students as Peer Advocates

Do you know students you who have the skills, compassion, and drive to become Columbus State Peer Advocates?

Recommended candidates should have knowledge of the Columbus State campus, programs, services, and opportunities for students, and have an interest in learning about community resources for referrals.  Peer Advocates should possess strong leadership abilities, active listening and communication skills, an aptitude for problem solving, comfort with public speaking, an ability to work with diverse populations, and the motivation to learn and help others in the Columbus State community.

Payroll information for SQL migration period

Payroll for the pay period ending April 15, for the  pay date of April 28, will be processed early due to the SQL migration project.

All employees using Web Time Entry must complete and sign their web time entry forms for the pay period by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, April 14, to ensure that their pay is processed. Employees should enter their actual hours worked for April 1 through 13, as well as their scheduled hours for April 14 and 15.

Supervisors should review and approve the time entry forms by 5:00 p.m. Friday, April 14.

All other payroll information is due in the payroll office by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, April 14. All paperwork received after this date will be processed for the following payroll.

 Any necessary corrections or adjustments will be made on the following pay period.

Fiscal Year-end purchasing deadlines listed

To allow as much time as possible for the expenditure of Fiscal Year 2017 funds, Purchasing will retain a June cut-off date for all purchases. The last day to purchase goods and services for the year ending June 30, 2017 is June 9.

Friday, May 19, is the last day to submit technology requests for software or hardware to IT. (itam@cscc.edu)

Friday, May 19, is the last day to submit for custom products at the Bookstore for end of year delivery.

Friday, June 9, is the last day to create requisitions.

Wednesday, June 14, is the last day to place orders with vendors. Exceptions must be approved by a Cabinet member and Darrin Albaugh, Purchasing Supervisor.

Friday, June 23, is the last day to place office supply orders with OfficeMax. 

Friday, June 30, is the last date by which all goods and services must be physically received in order to be charged to FY 2017 budget. (Note: operating budgets do not carry into the next fiscal year, so goods not received by June 30 will be applied to the FY 2018 budget.)

Friday, June 30, is the last day to complete and submit Bookstore requisitions for stock items in the Bookstore.

Friday, July 28, is the date invoices must be received in Accounts Payable to be paid from FY 2017.  Invoices received after July 31 will be charged to FY 2018.

‘College Knowledge’ to feature Marketing Department

Join Human Resources at the next “College Knowledge” session Friday, April 7, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. to learn about Marketing and Communications at Columbus State. Creative Director Lisa Farina will outline the work of Marketing and Communications and give an inside scoop on how the team creates the marketing, advertising and communication that builds Columbus State’s reputation. Reminder: Fee waiver deadline for summer semester is May 8

The deadline for summer semester Employee and Dependent Fee Waivers is Monday, May 8.  A Request for Fee Waiver form must be submitted to Human Resources by 4:30 p.m. to guarantee that the fee waiver will be processed before late fees are assessed.

You may also pay your fees first and be reimbursed within 30 days from the start of the term by completing the Request for Fee Waiver form and submitting an official payment receipt to Human Resources by Monday, June 10.
