Teachers honored at national conference

Every year, Columbus State’s Distinguished Teachers are recognized at the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Conference. The event, held in Austin, Texas, on May 25 through 27, promotes and celebrates excellence in teaching, learning and leadership at community colleges around the world. Jonathan Kreger, Melanie Adams, Ron Elizaga and Dan Foor each received a medal for Teaching Excellence.

 

ESL Afterschool program featured in The Columbus Dispatch

Encarnacion Pyle profiled Columbus State’s ESL Afterschool Communities program in today’s issue of The Columbus Dispatch. Since it started in 2004, the English as a Second Language program has helped 2,326 immigrant and refugee children build the academic, social and personal skills they need to thrive in their new country. The online culinary education magazine culinarycareers.net just named Columbus State’s Culinary Apprenticeship program number one out of the seven best culinary schools in Ohio. See the full list.

Students, faculty and staff march in Pride parade

Columbus State students, staff, faculty and community members marched in the 36th annual Stonewall Columbus Pride Parade on Saturday. The parade attracted thousands of spectators who lined up along the parade route, which started on High Street in the Short North and ended near Genoa Park.

 

 

 

 

 

Student development workers attend leadership institute

Executive Dean of Student Life Desiree Polk-Bland, Diversity Student Services Specialist Sarah Baker and C.A.S.E. Supervisor Anessa Becton-Howard recently completed the 2017 Walter G. Bumphus Leadership Institute. The leadership institute was hosted by The National Council on Student Development (NCSD) located on Georgia Piedmont Technical College campus in Atlanta, Georgia.

The leadership institute is designed to nurture participants for career advancement in student development. Using the theme “Reclaiming the American Dream: Community Colleges and the Nation’s Future” as the foundation, the institute provided an exciting opportunity for participants to share ideas and learn from each other while preparing to meet the challenges facing student development professionals.

 

Professor to perform with Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra

Jeanette Ferguson, assistant professor of biological and physical sciences, will be singing with Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra during their annual July 4th Concert held at Ohio Wesleyan University. “I'm incredibly honored that they have invited me to perform solo with them, and it is very special because I'm celebrating 15 years of survival from oral cancer that month,” Ferguson said. The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Lawn seating is free, chair seats are $6. You can purchase tickets at 24 E. Winter Street or at the concert.

Employee gears up for ninth Pelotonia ride

Systems Administrator Tim Malloy will be undertaking his ninth Pelotonia ride in August. He plans to bike 180 miles from Columbus to Gambier and back to raise money and awareness for cancer research. Learn more on his rider profile.

 

 

 

 

 

Workshop on hiring student workers

Career Services Student Employment invites campus hiring managers to attend a workshop that will review the process of posting and hiring for student jobs. After a general overview of the process, supervisors will be able to login to Cornerstone and submit Requisition Requests for autumn semester hiring.

Sessions are scheduled for:

  • Thursday, June 29 - 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

  • Tuesday, July 18 - 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

 

Women’s locker room closed

The Women’s Locker Room will be closed longer that originally planned and will reopen on Tuesday, June 27.

 

Reminder

Support TRIO at Platform Brewery today!

Columbus State employees, friends and family are invited to come support TRIO Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound Programs at Platform Brewery today.

Platform Brewery is located at 408 North 6th Street on campus, and has graciously agreed to donate 20 percent of its proceeds to TRIO from 3:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. today. In addition to enjoying great brews, food, and company, come on out to take part in trivia night or throw your ticket in for a few raffle items!
