Community Service Information
Community Service is a core value of
the Sport & Exercise Studies program at Columbus State. Since the
program’s initiation in 1992, students, faculty and associates
have been active meeting recreation and fitness needs in the
central Ohio community. The Sport & Exercise Studies program has been
active with many agencies including Children’s Hospital, Myelo
Clinic, Columbus AIDS Task Force, Mount Carmel East Dialysis
Center, City of Columbus Health Department and many others.
Teaching the student base to give back to the community and to
value volunteerism through use of professional expertise remains
a competency objective of the entire faculty.
One of the premier projects the
Sport & Exercise Studies program supports is the annual Myelo Athletic
Camp sponsored by Children’s Hospital each August. Since 1993,
the program has staffed the camp with student and alumni
athletic counselors. Their role is to provide athletic
activities and one-on-one interaction with children that live
with Spina Bifida. This effort has evolved into a personal
passion for Associate Professor Dr. Tom Habegger. His belief in
instilling the need for students to understand their role in
providing recreative services to our entire population begins by
meeting the needs of the under-served populations in central
Ohio.
The Sport & Exercise Studies program
continues to develop community outreach efforts utilizing the
Human Performance Center. Fitness testing and assessment, and
personal training services are packaged and offered to a variety
of community agencies in need of programming for their
constituents. The SFM program looks forward to entering its
second decade of service to the central Ohio community.
