Retroactive Academic Withdrawal
The
Retroactive Academic Withdrawal process is to be utilized if there
were documentable extenuating circumstances beyond the control of the
student, preventing the student from dropping the course by the posted
deadline.
Consideration will only be given to changing failing (E) and
unsatisfactory (U) grades to retroactive withdrawals (W) based upon
documentable:
Retroactive withdrawals will not be granted for these circumstances
which include but are not limited to:
-
Not knowing the withdrawal deadlines
-
No extenuating circumstances
-
Class non-attendance
-
Failing to make up incompletes (I) without extenuating circumstances
-
Failure to follow official academic withdrawal procedures
-
If the student had the ability to drop the course(s)
Supporting third-party documentation is required to accompany the
petition. Third-party documentation must be from someone other than the
student, or a relative or friend of the student and must verify the
situation/circumstances which prohibited the student from officially
withdrawing from class(es) and specify the dates these extenuating
circumstances occurred.
The student must also provide a statement of explanation, written and
signed by the petitioning student along with the petition and supporting
third-party documentation.
If a petition is denied the student has the opportunity to appeal the
decision. The student must submit the requested information by the
petition deadline noted in the notification letter. If the student
elects to appeal the decision and submits the requested documentation a
letter will be sent to inform the student when the Retroactive Academic
Withdrawal Appeals Committee will be meeting and the student will be
given the opportunity at that time to make an appointment to meet with
the committee to present their case for appeal.
