Admissions

You must have an application on file with Columbus State Community College. A separate (additional) application will be required for admission to the program. For an application to Columbus State, you may go online at www.cscc.edu. Follow the link to “students” and select “prospective students."

Dates of Importance

Please use the guidelines below to prepare for the next application period

Application available:    October 15

Application due date:   April 15 (to be considered, the entire application packet must be submitted by this time)

Prerequisite completion date: successful completion by the end of CSCC spring quarter (check academic calendar on the website @ www.cscc.edu)

Acceptance letters (conditional or unconditional):  mailed to students after May 15. Students who are not employed in, or who do not have an arrangement with a clinical facility are ‘conditionally accepted’ prior to interview in the clinical facilities. Students who work in clinical facilities or otherwise have an arrangement with a clinical facility are accepted ‘unconditionally’, provided there is space available and prerequisites have been met.

Student’s ‘intention to accept’ form due back to the Program Director:  June 1. After this date, ‘conditionally accepted’ students will be contacted to arrange an interview at the potential clinical facilities before an ‘unconditional acceptance’ can be granted. Students who are accepted at this point will interview with prospective clinical supervisors who will then rank the students. Placement for clinical courses is based upon this rank. If a student is not accepted by any of the facilities, the student is denied acceptance into the program.

Interview at clinical facilities: by July 1. Clinical placement is completed and students are notified of the placement after all interviews are complete and rankings are provided to the Program Director. If a student denies acceptance at the clinical facility in which they are placed will be denied acceptance into the program.

Students receive Histology Student Handbook and the Clinical Practicum Manual by July 30 via electronic communication. Acknowledgement forms from these documents due to Program Director by August 1.
Registration for Fall quarter classes begin on the date identified in the college academic calendar.

Note:  Health Records must be complete prior to registration for classes.

Fees are due on the date identified in the college calendar. Failure to pay fees will result in classes being dropped. Registration must be completed again. Students must be registered and fees paid before they can gain access to Blackboard.

How to Begin the Application Process

  1. Apply to the college and take any placement tests.

  2. If you already work in a clinical facility in which you would like to complete your clinical courses, make contact with the Histology Supervisor and/or Lab Manager/Director so that they can contact the CSCC Histotechnician Program Director regarding the program requirements and to initiate a clinical affiliation agreement if an agreement doesn’t already exist between the college and clinical facility.

  3. If you do not live in the central Ohio area and do not work in a clinical facility, you will need to contact the Histology Supervisor and/or Lab Manager/Director of a facility nearby in which you would like to complete your clinical courses. Then that person must contact the CSCC  Histotechnician Program Director regarding the program requirements and to initiate a clinical affiliation agreement if an agreement doesn’t already exist between the college and clinical facility.  Alternatively, after your initial contact with the supervisor, you may provide the contact name and phone number to the Program Director. This is required before any affiliation agreement can be initiated.
Note: Completion of Clinical Affiliation Agreements can sometimes be a long process. It is never too soon to begin this process.

  4. Submit application documents to the Histotechnician program. This is separate from the application to the college. Submit official transcripts to the Student Records and Registration department from any colleges/universities in which you have received credit. DO NOT SEND to the Program Director. It is the student’s responsibility to verify that appropriate prerequisite courses are transferred.

  5. Arrange an conference with the Program Director. This conference can be conducted by phone and should be arranged following completion of the program application and all associated documents.

  6. Start the process of completing the Health Record and submitting all necessary documents to the Health Records Office. DO NOT SEND to the Program Director. Health records must be complete prior to registration for fall quarter classes.

Acceptance Criteria

The college reserves the right to restrict the size of the class to a maximum of 15 students.  Students who are not accepted may reapply the following year by submitting another application with the documentation required at that time. No files are kept for unaccepted students.

  1. Submission of a complete application packet (see application for all required documents)

  2. Successful completion of all prerequisites. These need to be taken either at CSCC or at another institution and credits transferred to CSCC. These must be successfully completed by the end of CSCC Spring Quarter.

  3. Health Record completion.

  4. Acceptable ‘READI- Assessment’ results. See the application for more details.

  5. Conference with the Program Director.

  6. Space in the clinical facility.  Students who work in a clinical facility or who otherwise have made arrangements with a clinical facility (outside of the central Ohio area) for completion of clinical courses will be given priority.

  7. Priority for accepting students is determined by meeting acceptance criteria, program application receipt date and availability of clinical placement sites.  If there are fewer clinical
experience positions than qualified applicants, priority will be given to those students currently working in a facility with whom the College has a clinical affiliation agreement. In addition,
academic performance and READI Assessment results will be considered.

Upon conditional acceptance into the program, students will be required to be interviewed by any potential clinical affiliate for final acceptance and clinical placement determination. If, after this interview is conducted, the student is denied placement, the student will be denied acceptance into the program and must repeat the application process.  If a student is denied twice for clinical placement, the student will not be considered for the program again.
