Providence Glen Afterschool Program

The afterschool program at Providence Glen is supported by an Ohio Department of Education, 21st Century Community Learning Center grant that was awarded in 2005. The program serves thirty-five 2nd-5th grade Somali students and families that reside at Providence Glen Apartments. It is held in the Community Center of the complex which makes transportation a breeze. Program hours are 3-6pm Monday-Friday. The students attend various schools within Columbus Public School District community-based charter schools.

A DAY IN A LIFE of a Providence Glen Participant

After students have finished their homework, they may work on Leap Pad, the testing assessment for the program. The student may also work out of their folders which are maintained by the tutor/instructor working with the student. The folders are meant to provide extra practice for the students in areas where there are achievement gaps. Some students provide peer tutoring. The staff encourages students to help each other and work together to solve problems. They may also play games, read or have a book read to them, color or do a puzzle before dinner.

The program serves dinner around 5pm, thanks to CSCC’s partnership with Children’s Hunger Alliance. Dinner is a time for the teachers to engage the students in activities that go beyond academics. The students work together as a team to prepare the "classroom" for dinner.  The staff also uses this time to encourage manners; such as the use of "please" and "thank you."  Socializing and unwinding is another part of the dinner routine.

The best thing about the Providence Glen afterschool program is watching the students grow and seeing their excitement everyday. The program contributes to the students’ academic achievements and provides a boost in self-confidence from achieving goals they may have once found difficult to reach.
