Sunrise on Semesters—Come celebrate with us!
Help us flip the switch on semesters at a
brief event early on the first day of
classes, Wednesday, August 29. After
several years of being just over the
horizon, semesters are finally dawning
and it’s time to celebrate! Faculty, staff,
and students are invited to gather near
the Light Sails sculpture in the center of
campus beginning at 7:45 a.m. The
event, which includes the lighting of an
8-foot-tall, student-designed “switch”
sculpture, will conclude in time for you to get
to class or work at 8:00. Sunrise on Semesters
offers a unique way to herald a successful
college-wide initiative and a new era of student
success at Columbus State. After the event, you can
grab free coffee, breakfast munchies and an S2S
giveaway in the Welcome Tent. See you there!
Tasting the Future with Clawdette

Textbook rental program launched
In response to student demand for less expensive textbooks and more textbook options, as well as supporting the campus initiative to make required learning materials more affordable, the Columbus State Bookstore is launching an in-store textbook rental program beginning Autumn Semester. The new term will be a test to gauge student interest, involving just a few titles, but high student participation is expected. The bookstore currently offers an online rental program, but financial aid students are unable to take advantage of this program. The new in-store rental program will be open to all students and they will be able to use their financial aid book allowance. The courses with books in the new rental program are Small Group Communication, Business Communication, Government and the Law, Legal Environment of Business, Introduction to Physics, Introduction to Psychology, and Abnormal Psychology.
New Autumn Semester textbooks still being stocked
While many of the textbooks for Autumn Semester are in stock, the Bookstore will be receiving new titles right up until the start of classes. The Bookstore is posting a daily out-of-stock report at www.cscc.edu/bookstore where students will be able to see the estimated time of delivery for out-of-stock books.
Math and Science college readiness discussed
Columbus State hosted an Ohio Board of Regents meeting of the statewide Math and Science College Readiness Panel August 17. The meeting, co-chaired by Gerald Mueller, professor of Mathematics, and Bob Midden, professor of Chemistry at Bowling Green State University, is part of an ongoing effort for this panel of math and science faculty members from around the state. They have been meeting, with assistance from OBR staff, to discuss and develop expectations for college readiness for first year math and science courses without the need for remediation. T.J. Duda, associate professor in Mathematics, is also on the panel.
The OBR's goal for the panel is to recommend to the presidents of the public institutions a set of college readiness standards, assessments, and placement benchmarks for math and science (as well as for reading and writing by another panel) for them to consider for adoption by the end of this year. The work is being coordinated by the Chancellor in response to implementation of HB 153.
