Art installation will be finishing touch at Library
Cleveland artist Olga Ziemska will be on the Columbus Campus July 28 and 29 to install her sculpture “Indra,” commissioned by the college as part of the Percent for Art program.
The recent state-funded renovation of the Columbus Hall Library will include a piece of public art by Ziemska, a CCAD graduate who took classes at Columbus State while earning her degree. Her work will be installed on the façade of Columbus Hall, on Saturday, July 28, and Sunday, July 29.
Ms. Ziemska has received many prestigious grants and awards including a Fulbright Fellowship in 2002 and a Creative Workforce Fellowship in 2009. In 2007, Ziemska was selected as a Wendy L. Moore Emerging Artist by the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland. She has participated in several residencies nationally and abroad, including the Centre of Polish Sculpture in Poland. Ms. Ziemska visited the Columbus Campus in September 2011 and engaged the college community by seeking input on her design. The college’s Percent for Arts Committee partnered with the Ohio Arts Council to select the work for the Library. Committee members include Tom Robbins, Architecture; Bill Cook, Humanities; Shona Wainwright, Library; Renee Hampton, Student Life; Jim Spencer and Eric McMillon, Facilities Services; Mandy Golhoffer, ITDL; Beth Bates and Terri Gehr, Business and Administrative Services. The Ohio Arts Council was represented by Kathy Signorino and Ken Emerick.
Ohio law requires that one percent of an allocation made by the State of Ohio for a construction project must be used for public art. Examples of the Percent for Art program at Columbus State include the “Vault” installation that crosses Cleveland Avenue and “Light Sails,” the glass and steel sculpture in the courtyard of the Columbus campus.

Learn4Life Columbus will host a Language and Early Literacy Conference Tuesday, August 14, from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Veterans Memorial. Topics will include vocabulary development, interactive reading, conversational practice, coaching, early learning content standards, scaffolding learning, and school readiness: how to know what works.

Friday, July 20, began the observance of Ramadan, the holiest month in Islam. Observed by more than a billion Muslims around the world, Ramadan is a time for spiritual purification achieved through a fast. Diversity and Study Abroad Programs is partnering with the Library to provide a space during this special time for our Muslim community members to be able to observe Ramadan together on Friday afternoons in the Library multimedia studio from 1:00–3:00 p.m.; 1:30 p.m. Khutbah. Dates are: July 27, August 3, 10 and 17. Make sure to wish a colleague or student a Happy and Peaceful Ramadan.
The Fulbright International Education Administrator Seminars are designed for U.S. higher education administrators who are interested in spending an intensive two-week seminar in one of five countries: India, Japan, Korea, Germany or France. Each seminar offers participants an in-depth look at the higher education system, culture and society of the host country and provides an invigorating opportunity for networking with international and U.S. colleagues. Participants return to their home institutions empowered with first-hand knowledge, new professional connections and an enhanced ability to build partnerships, encourage study abroad participation and support international students.

Rocco Di Pietro, adjunct instructor in Humanities, will premiere his pieces “Melodia Assoluta” for solo cello “New Rajas and Gunas for Reciter and Ensemble with Pseudo Gypsy Dance” on Friday, July 27, at the Urban Arts Space, at 50 W. Town St. in the former Lazarus building. Rocco’s piece “Italian Rajas” was the winner of the Ohio Arts Council’s 2012 Individual Excellence Award. Also featured will be a new piece for reciter and percussion by OSU student David Nelson Tomassaci and a solo cello improvisation by OSU student Ramsey Sadaka. Music performances will begin at 6:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to all.
