A New Phase for Earn & Learn
Columbus State is launching the next generation of the Modern Manufacturing Work Study (MMWS) program, creating a more intentional pathway that connects current Columbus State students with paid work-based learning opportunities at the right point in their academic journey.
The updated model focuses on supporting students who have built a strong technical foundation and are ready to apply their skills in the workplace while strengthening partnerships with local manufacturing employers.
We'll reach out to qualified students
Unlike previous cohorts, students will not apply directly to the program. During the Autumn 2026 semester, eligible students will be identified through Columbus State's eligibility reporting process and will receive direct communication from college staff inviting them to participate in MMWS.
What to Expect
Students selected to participate in the Modern Manufacturing Work Study program will complete a comprehensive career preparation experience designed to help them succeed throughout the hiring process and beyond.
The program includes:
- 10 weeks of online, asynchronous career preparation, allowing students to complete coursework on a flexible schedule.
- Professional and durable skills development, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, workplace professionalism, and other competencies valued by today's manufacturing employers.
- Resume and interview preparation, with resources and guidance to help students confidently navigate the hiring process.
- Employer engagement opportunities that prepare students to transition from the classroom to paid work-based learning.
By combining technical education with career readiness, MMWS helps students build
the confidence, skills, and professional experience needed to thrive in today's manufacturing
workforce.
Student Eligibility
To be eligible for the Modern Manufacturing Work Study program, students must:
- Maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
- Complete 50–70% of their required technical coursework (approximately 15–20 technical credit hours, depending on program requirements)
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Be eligible to work in the United States without employer sponsorship
Eligible Academic Programs
- Electromechanical Engineering Technology (EMEC)
- Electrical Engineering Technology (EET)
- Mechanical Engineering Technology (MECH)
Why the Changes?
The Modern Manufacturing Work Study program is evolving to expand opportunities for Columbus State students while continuing to meet the needs of today's advanced manufacturing workforce.
The updated model will:
- Expand access to paid work-based learning opportunities for current Columbus State students.
- Align participation with key milestones in students' academic progress, helping them apply their technical knowledge in a professional setting.
- Reflect the evolving skills and experience sought by today's manufacturing employers.
- Continue to connect students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that complement their classroom education.
- Strengthen partnerships with industry to support a skilled workforce and successful career pathways for graduates.
