Columbus State student to premiere film February 10 at Studio 35

"She had legs men would die for and she wore black." That's how Columbus State Community College video production major Mike Butcher introduces his new movie She Wore Black. The 11½-minute film will premier at Studio 35 at 11 p.m. Friday, February 10, and will run for a week at the theater.

She Wore Black is the first student-produced film to be shown locally coming from the new Audio/Video Production program at Columbus State.

Shot in a film noire style, the movie is a "thriller about love gone wrong," Butcher says.

The film stars Butcher's friends Gary Crickmore, Laura Higher, and Robert Holmes.

The movie was shot locally and edited in the new AVID video production facilities of Columbus State's Marketing and Graphic Communications Department this year. Butcher shot the film on mini-DV in the 24p format. "It's all digital. The 24p format looks more like film," says Butcher.

"Butcher's work is dynamic and creative," says instructor Paul Carringer. "He represents many of the students in our program who are developing the skills needed for a strong career in the film industry."

“The audio/video production track focuses on the production process, taking students from pre-production through post-production and marketing,” says Jim Higgins, instructor in the Interactive Multimedia program. “It’s a cumulative process.”

Butcher, 33, will graduate with his degree next year and hopes to transfer into a four-year program to pursue a bachelor's degree in the field. A director/producer he admires is do-it-yourself film guru Robert Rodriguez ( El Mariachi, Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, Spy Kids). Rodriguez started his career on a shoestring, acting as the editor, writer, producer, director, camera operator and even special effects guy on his own movies.

"Five years from now I hope I'm working for Troublemaker Studios, Rodriguez's studio.   I actually plan to send him my resume as soon as I graduate from Columbus State," said Butcher. "In 10 years, I would hope to be making my own movies, but as along as I am behind a camera, I will be happy."
