Donate during February to Columbus State’s Combined Charitable Giving Campaign

Columbus State’s annual charitable giving campaign will take place during the month of February, allowing employees to donate to their favorite charity within these six charitable federations: The United Way of Central Ohio, The United Way of Delaware County, America’s Charities, EarthShare Ohio, Community Health Charities of Ohio, and Community Share of Mid Ohio.

These federations raise funds for nonprofit organizations who address community needs that impact health and research, human services, education, human and civil rights, and the environment and conservation - locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. By making a gift to one or more of the listed charities you can make a difference in your backyard and around the world.

You can find the list of agencies and their donation codes in the Donor Resource Guide online. (Document is on the Intranet, and not available off campus)  After you have selected a charity, you can find the Employee Pledge Form online, fill it out, print the form and send it with your check or payroll deduction information to:  Barbara Smith-Allen, coordinator for Community and Civic Engagement, Franklin Hall 132.

Student Success grant proposal deadline is extended

The deadline to submit preliminary proposals to the Student Success Council for Innovation Fund projects has been extended until Monday, February 17, at noon.

The Student Success Innovation Fund has $200,000 that has been set aside for exploratory student success projects.  This is “one-time” money that can be used to begin or explore new processes that aim to improve student success.

Any current Columbus State administrator, faculty member, or staff member can apply for funding.  The first step in the process is completion of the Preliminary Proposal Form which can also be found at the Achieving the Dream site under “news.”

Completed Preliminary Proposal Forms can be sent electronically to ATD@cscc.edu.  After Preliminary Proposals have been evaluated, the Full Proposal deadline will be Monday, March 20.  Applicants should also schedule a pre-proposal meeting with the appropriate vice president or designee in the applicant’s area.  Student Affairs proposals should be sent to Desiree Polk-Bland or Mabel Freeman. Academic Affairs proposals should be sent to T. J. Duda.  All other proposals should be sent to Tracy Little or Desiree Polk-Bland.  The Student Success Council hopes that you will consider submitting your ideas or ongoing student success projects for funding!

Volunteers needed for Central District Science Day March 15

Columbus State will again host the Ohio Academy of Sciences Central District Science Day, Saturday, March 15. The event falls on the final weekend of Columbus State’s Spring Break (March 10-15).

More than 500 students from local area middle and high schools will present their science projects in hopes of advancing to the state competition in May. Volunteers are needed to judge these projects and to assist in the smooth operation of the activities.

Judges will be needed from 8:00 a.m. to approximately 12:30 p.m. If you have never judged science projects before, don’t worry. An orientation session will assist you. All judging is done in pairs with inexperienced judges matched with experienced judges.

Additional volunteers are needed to assure smooth operations during the event. Times of service will vary. Volunteers help students find their display sites, assist in registration, tally up the scores, assist the judges by collecting score cards, and act as hall monitors to maintain order and security.  There is a volunteer job for every person regardless of science training.

This is an excellent community service opportunity so come and help make it a success!

Help throw a birthday party on Saturday!
Columbus State’s Community Service Club, “Cougars for the Community”, will host a community service event, open to all students and employees, at the YWCA Family Center on Saturday, February 8, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The event will be a big birthday party for all the children who live at the YWCA Family Center. The volunteers will help serve refreshments and birthday cake, assist with games and prizes, and just have fun with the kids! The YWCA Family Center is located at 900 Harvey Court, Columbus, Ohio, 43219 and you can go to “Cougars for the Community” website, www.cscforthecommunity.org, to get more details on this event and future community service events.

Employees and students are also invited to participate in Student Engagement and Leadership’s (SEaL) “Saturday of Service,” which will be held at the Milo-Grogan Boys and Girls Club, 1012 Cleveland Ave., from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Participants will work on various indoor service projects at the location. Annual Black History Month Read-In is Feb. 13

Columbus State’s Office of Global Diversity and Inclusion and the English Department will present the 25th Annual  National African American Read-In Chain, a Black History Month celebration, on Thursday, February 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Nestor Hall West Lounge.

The Read-In is a National Council Teachers of English, NCTE Black Caucus, and International Reading Association initiative.

Deadline nears for Service Learning designation

Do you incorporate service learning in your teaching?  If so, join the growing list of “S” course offerings for academic year 2014-2015 by applying for an S-designation for your Spring Semester 2015 classes.

According to Learn and Serve, service learning is “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning process, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.” 

Letter SBeginning Autumn Semester 2014, sections of existing courses that meet the criteria for service learning will be offered in the course listing with the “S” suffix.  The S-designation makes it easier for students to locate service-learning classes and provides standards for class design across the college.

All S-designation requests are handled through the Office of Academic Affairs Service Learning Committee.  For guidance on this process, please contact the committee co-chairs Lisa Briggs and Nancy Pine.

Order your Valentine flowers from the Columbus State Landscape Association by Monday, February 10!  Support the students’ fundraiser to travel to the Student Career Days national competition in March, by purchasing roses or tulips for someone special (or yourself!)  Roses are available in white, pink, red, or yellow, in singles for $3, half-dozen for $15, or a dozen for $30.  Tulips are $5 a bunch.  Order by emailing: csla.treasurer@gmail.com.
