SEOM is “nerve center” for Human Resources
BoyerCarmelita Boyer, administrative assistant, is the nerve center for the complex and varied needs of the Human Resources Department, according to Deborah Heater.  “If you are not sure who can provide a particular HR need, Carmelita can help you!” she says.

“Carmelita serves on, or provides support for many committees, including union contract negotiations, promotion and tenure, Years of Service recognition, the retiree luncheon, the voluntary cash separation incentive, CQI awards, Distinguished Full Professor awards, Staff Employee of the Month, Staff Advisory Council and Shared Governance,” Heater says.

“During my six-month tenure as Interim VP of HR, Carmelita was an invaluable and supportive partner as I navigated the new environment.  On many occasions, I used her as a research intern as I endeavored to understand particular issues,” says Kimberly Hall, chief of staff.

Nominated by Susan Thomas, Boyer was awarded the Staff Employee of the Month award for October at the recent First Wednesday meeting.  Says Thomas: “Carmelita is the go-to person for all SAC’s community service projects such as Children’s Hunger Alliance, Firefighters for Kids, Mid-Ohio Food Bank—as well as a Human Resources guru!

“She also oversees a new award—the Part-time Employee of the Month—which requires her to coordinate a time and space for the award since not every part-time employee works the same schedule.”

Celebrate faculty excellence Oct. 18

trophyYou are invited to the CSEA Faculty Excellence Awards, to be given on Friday, October 18, at 2:00 p.m. in the Conference Center Ballroom, fourth floor WD.

The CSEA Faculty Excellence Award was created to recognize CSEA members who demonstrate distinction in an area of service, teaching or leadership. Each year, two faculty members are selected to receive a plaque and a $500 cash award.  Any Columbus State CSEA member can nominate a faculty member for the award. The award is given for achievements in one or more of these areas: Significant participation or leadership in a professional organization, innovation in instruction, commitment to student success, community service, and/or college service.

The 2013 awardees are Susan Moran, professor in Communication, and Daniel Hare, instructor and Program Coordinator in Criminal Justice.  The award ceremony is open to all employees!

Board of Regents names Hay as new Deputy Chancellor
HayThe Ohio Board of Regents has named Cheryl Hay as its new Deputy Chancellor for Higher Education Workforce Alignment.

Hay will be on “loan” to the Board of Regents through 2014 from Columbus State, where she has been serving as senior executive director of the Center for Workforce Development since 2006. While at Columbus State, Hay led industry strategy at the local and state level, newly skilled worker pipelines, as well as continuing education programs for professionals, economic development strategies, and the integration of workforce strategies into education delivery.

"Cheryl brings a wealth of workforce development experience to her role here," said Chancellor John Carey. "I look forward to working with her as we continue to align higher education in Ohio with the workforce needs of Ohio's businesses, and I appreciate the cooperation received from Columbus State."

Before joining Columbus State, Hay served as senior vice president of Children's Hunger Alliance and vice president of workforce development for the Columbus Chamber. While at the Chamber, Hay initiated long-term workforce development efforts to ensure a quality workforce for the Chamber's 3,500 local business members.

New OSHA standards training offered on Blackboard

graphicThe OSHA Hazard Communication Standard has been updated to match the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). The new hazard communication standard will be phased in over several years; however, employers are required to train workers on the new label elements, the new Safety Data Sheet format, and other aspects of the new rule, by December 1, 2013.

Columbus State now offers an online training course which provides a description of the changes to hazard warning labels and Safety Data Sheets required under the newly revised OSHA Hazard Communication Standard.  This training is required for all employees working with or around chemicals on the job.  The course, available on Blackboard, consists of a training module and a 10-question quiz.

If your job duties involve exposure to hazardous chemicals, please complete the Hazard Communication 2 – GHS module by December 1, 2013. From the Columbus State webpage (cscc.edu), click on the “Blackboard” link in the top right corner.  Use your Novell ID and password to log in.  Click on the “My Organizations” tab under the Columbus State banner at the top of the page.  Select “Health & Safety Training 2013” and the modules are listed in the left column.

If you have questions about this training, please contact Lori Thomas, ext.3860 or Dean Bortz, ext.5033.

Reminder: Service learning designations due Nov. 1
Do you incorporate service-learning in your teaching?  If so, you may apply for an “S-designation” for your Autumn Semester 2014 classes.

According to the organization Learn and Serve, service-learning is “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning process, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.”

New, beginning Autumn Semester 2014, Columbus State sections of existing courses that meet the criteria for service learning may be offered in the course listing with an “S” suffix.  The S-designation makes it easier for students to locate service-learning classes and provides standards for class design across the college.

All S-designation requests will be handled through the Office of Academic Affairs Service-Learning Committee.  For guidance on this process, please contact the committee co-chairs Lisa Briggs and Nancy Pine.

To submit your S-Designation application for approval, please email the committee chairs or servicelearning@cscc.edu to receive a proposal form. The deadline to submit proposals for Autumn Semester 2014 classes is November 1, 2013.
