Day of Service is Thursday,
Sept. 26

Columbus State employees at both the Columbus Campus and Delaware Campus are getting ready to pull off the biggest community service project in the history of the college this Thursday, September 26!

Volunteers and Team Leaders have been signed up to perform service activities at more than 50 locations around central Ohio and in Delaware County.  On the downtown campus, employees are being asked to arrive between 7:45 and 8:00 a.m. to get a bite for breakfast, pick up lunch boxes, t-shirts, anniversary posters ( don’t worry—we’ll give you a bag for all this stuff!), and then hear a few words from President Harrison.  This pep rally takes place outdoors on the courtyard near the statue.  At Delaware, participants will meet at 8:00 a.m. in Moeller Hall for a similar activity.

If you have not been contacted by your team leader prior to the Day of Service, you will be able to meet with your team, get your directions, and even arrange a quick carpool to the location directly after the Pep Rally.  All volunteer activities are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.  After each community service activity is over, employees will return to campus to: attend department meetings if one has been scheduled (check with your supervisor); finish the work day as regularly scheduled; or depart for the day (if a leave form has been submitted).

On Day of Service, we'd like to see you in action, but our photographers may not get to every site, so if you post pictures on social media, please use the hashtag #cscc50th.

Anniversary featured in Columbus Dispatch

Today's Columbus Dispatch features some "good news" about Columbus State's 50th Anniversary.  Dispatch: Columbus State celebrates 50 years of growth

The Dispatch spoke to several successful alums, such as Congressman Pat Tiberi; Lewis Smoot Jr., senior vice president of Smoot Construction; and Carolyn Ireland, executive director for House of Hope for Alcoholics Inc.

Columbus Mayor Mike Coleman said Columbus State is "essential."
"And I think it will play an even greater role in the future because employers today are looking for people with specific skills for targeted jobs, and no one can do that as well as Columbus State," the mayor told the Dispatch.

Columbus State was in the news last week for its Master Plan, which calls for increasing collaboration with area colleges and partners, as well as a number of possible new buildings. (Access + Quality + Affordability = Master Plan)

Landscape club wins Community Stewardship Award

Helping Hands in the Garden volunteers add some color to a cancer patient’s front garden

Columbus State’s Helping Hands in the Garden club, advised by Dick Ansley, professor of Landscape Design and Management, was recently given the Professional Landcare Network’s (PLANET) Community Stewardship Award.

Helping Hands in the Garden was founded in 2009 by Columbus State alumna and breast cancer survivor Elaine Euwer. The group was set up by the Columbus State Landscape Association and its non-profit alumni affiliate, to help cancer patients with gardening tasks that might be too much for them to handle.

Helping Hands in the Garden leaves brochures in local oncology clinics and doctor’s offices throughout the Columbus area, so patients can apply to receive the donated services.

With more than 25 volunteers, the group has assisted 62 families with their gardens since 2009, completing general cleanups, installing a vegetable garden, adding seasonal color to front yards and much more.  “The program is a win-win situation,” says Ansley. “It benefits the students, who get real-life experience with the hands-on work, as well as the chance to network with industry professionals who are also volunteering.” Professional landscape companies donate all materials for the projects.
“This has been a wonderful experience,” Euwer says. “We feel we’re making a difference in these cancer patients’ lives, and it’s also been a great way for students to learn.”

Testing Center needs your help scheduling!

thanksgiving artworkUnlike Autumn Semester 2012, this year Finals Week falls directly after the Thanksgiving Holiday, which is November 28 through December 1.  Because there is no week to catch up on regular testing before finals begin on December 2, the Testing Center is asking for faculty help scheduling ALL regular and catch-up testing to be completed by Wednesday, November 27—before Thanksgiving.  This way, the Testing Center can keep lines to a minimum and allow students to complete their Final Exams without delay the week of December 2 -8.

Students who make use of weekend testing should be advised to complete all regular and catch-up testing by Saturday, November 23, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on what the Testing Center is calling “Super Saturday.”  Only the Columbus Campus Testing Center will be open on Super Saturday, November 23.  As a reminder, The Testing Centers at all locations are closed on Sundays.

The Testing Center’s goal is to provide the best possible service to the campus community during this critical time of the semester, and it is much appreciated if faculty can emphasize to all students that regular testing for Autumn Semester should be completed during the week prior to the Thanksgiving Holiday.

For more information about Testing Center hours and policies, please call ext. 5219.

Columbus State Birthday Party rocks Sept. 30!

logoFollowing closely on the heels of the Day of Service project comes the actual BIRTHDAY of Columbus State—on Monday, September 30, 1963,  five dozen students attended the first classes at Columbus Area Technician School, then located in the basement of Central High School.

On Monday, September 30, 2013, the campus will be rocking with special birthday activities including a cupcake-decorating contest, an official huge birthday cake for all to enjoy, a student talent show, lots of music and games, an old-fashioned photo booth, the signing of the official College Completion Pledge banner, free anniversary t-shirts and giveaways, a few (not many) speeches, and a couple of surprises that you’ll just have to be there to find out!

Students are also participating in the “50 Acts of Kindness” project organized by Student Engagement and Leadership.  They will be bringing non-perishable food items to donate at the Birthday Party, so please join them in this activity by bringing some food items for Mid-Ohio Food Bank as well. SEaL will have a table at the party to collect donations.
