Great Performances at the Lincoln start March 5

Columbus State’s music and theater programs will perform various works in a special series at the Lincoln Theatre, starting March 5 with the Columbus State Concert Band, under the direction of Thomas Lloyd and the Columbus State Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Rick Brunetto.

Both bands will offer a special concert made up of the work of woman composers, in honor of Women’s History Month in March.  The band and jazz concert will be from 8:00 – 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5 in the Lincoln Theatre, 769 E. Long St.
On Monday, March 25, Chorus Columbus State, under the direction of Gordon Franklin, will present a concert featuring spirituals and jazz songs, also from 8:00 – 9:30 p.m. at the Lincoln.

In April, award-winning director Frank Barnhart will take Theatre Columbus State to the Lincoln to perform Six Degrees of Separation, an examination of the threads of chance that link one person to another.  The play will run Wednesday through Saturday, April 24 – 27, from 8:00 – 10:00 p.m. A special matinee will be performed on Thursday, April 25 at 3:00 p.m. 

The Series will wrap up on Monday, April 29 with Emma Easton’s Gospel Vocal Ensemble performing a Historic Flashback of Great Gospel Choirs, from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m.  

All concerts and plays are free and open to the public. 

Heater joins Columbus State as new Vice President of Human Resources

Deborah Heater

Deborah Heater, an Ohio native with extensive experience in K-12 and higher education, has joined Columbus State as Vice President of Human Resources.  In her role, she will oversee our more than 2,000 full and part-time staff and faculty members.

Heater is a performance management professional with experience reviewing organizational effectiveness and instituting systemic improvements in educational settings. Her most recent position was with the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash, where she served as Director of Human Resources and Organizational Development.

She previously served as the Chief Officer of Human Resources for the 5,000-employee Cincinnati Public Schools system. Heater also spent seven years as Investigator of Office Municipal Investigations and Contract Compliance with the City of Cincinnati. She earned her BA in English literature from the University of Cincinnati and her J.D. from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University.

Heater says she is “committed to a HR service delivery model designed to partner with our constituents in alignment with the college's strategic goals. We will represent the best interest of our stakeholders while operating within legal compliance requirements, college policies, and best practices."

Bocchino is new director of Advising Services

Greg Bocchino, Ed.D. has been hired as Columbus State’s new Director of Advising Services. He has worked in academic advising, career counseling, and student development for the past 19 years, most recently as Director of Advising and Student Services at the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Bocchino earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master's degree in school counseling from the State University of New York, and an Ed.D. in counseling and human development from the University of Rochester.

Dr. Bochinno has also taught undergraduate and graduate career counseling and student success courses. He is most proud of his work on a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Pathway to Success Community College Partnership program which enhanced opportunities for community college students to transfer to Cornell University and other top four-year institutions.

Dr. Bocchino has also worked closely with college students examining their personal values and priorities, and has developed creative activities to assist students in gaining a better understanding of personal motivation and how it impacts decision making.  He has presented his work at numerous national conferences.

OBOR Chancellor Petro retires

Jim Petro

Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Jim Petro concluded more than 30 years of public service Feb. 1, retiring after serving nearly two years as Chancellor. Petro was appointed by Governor John Kasich in March 2011 to lead the University System of Ohio, one of the largest systems of public higher education in the nation. 
Petro began his tenure as Chancellor with a goal of increasing completion rates among Ohio’s students, and promoted ways that students could earn an associate degree, bachelor’s degree or certificate of completion in less time and for less money.

Petro earned a law degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1973 and a bachelor’s degree in history from Denison University in 1970. He also received honorary doctorates from The University of Toledo and Denison University.
