Summer Quarter graduation will mark 40,000th graduate!

Graduates of CTI in the late 60s attended ceremonies at Battelle Memorial Institute’s auditorium. The Delaware Hall gymnasium wasn’t built until 1976, and then the ceremonies moved there until the late 80s when attendance grew too large. Since then, most graduation ceremonies have been held at Veteran’s Memorial.

A happy Spring Quarter ’09 graduate celebrates in June.
The commencement ceremony on September 11 will be special for all 400 students earning degrees this Summer Quarter, but it will be a little extra special for the lucky graduate who crosses the stage at Veterans Memorial as the 40,000th graduate of Columbus State! We won’t know who that’s going to be until graduation day, but when the countdown reaches that number, a big announcement will be made and that person will receive a little extra recognition, gifts and a slightly different photograph than the standard “receiving the diploma” shot!
Since Columbus State began as Columbus Area Technician’s School in 1963, there have been 39,911 graduates, including the class of 1965, which totaled 67 grads. That was the same year that the college was renamed Columbus Technical Institute, or “CTI.” Columbus State became a comprehensive community college in 1987.
